Polymers.” “Detectability Limits
Attainable in Resistance Thermo
metry” is being presented by Dr.
Randolph C. Wilhoit, assistant di
rector of the Thermodynamics
Research Center.
TRC is displaying its entire 37
year output of tables from Ameri
can Petroleum Institute and Man
ufacturing Chemists Association
research Projects. Eight vol
umes of thermodynamic data,
consisting of 3,500 sheets of 500,-
000 entries have been reduced to
37 four-by-six inch microcards.
Wilhoit is in charge of the ex
hibit. The service, expenditing
student and professional use of
chemical compounds data, will be
distributed by A&M on a world
wide basis.

Fletcher Publishes
Engineering Article
Robert H. Fletcher, associate
professor of mechanical engineer
ing, has published an article in
the June issue of “Power r.’ngi-
neering” magazines entitled
“Here’s a Way to Check Boiler
Feed Pump Performance.”
The article includes a pump
evaluation program designed to
use standard plant instrumenta
tion to measure the amount of
wear. Excess wear reduces the
pump efficiency and/or a de
crease in the quantity of water
which can be pumped, resulting
in a reduced output capability of
the power generating unit.
According to Fletcher, the sys
tem is useful in indicating when
one of a pair of pumps becomes
weak, causing the second pump to
be overloaded to the extent that
there is danger of an overload
tripout with the consequent loss
of both pumps. He says tests
have shown that in many in
stances a weak pump teamed
with another pump tends to be
come even weaker and therefore
does not support a proportionate
share of the investment dollar
per kilowatt generated.
The peculiarities of mis-mated
pump operation observed in the
new evaluation procedure is be
ing investigated by Fletcher and
a graduate student, David Beers,
under the sponsorship of the Elec
tric Power Institute.
