Take a dime. Then take a bottle of Sprite from the nearest pop machine. Suddenly it's in your hand. Cold. Biting. Tart and tingling. You cackle fiendishly and rub your hands together. (You should; they're probably chilled to the bone by now You tear off to a corner, alone, but within earshot of your fellows. And then? And then? And then you unleash it. SPRITE! It fizzes! It roars! It bubbles with good cheer! Heads turn. Whisperings. "Who's that strangely fascinating student with the arch smile. And what's in that curious green bottle that's making such a racket?" And you've arrived! The distinctive taste and ebullient character of Sprite has set you apart. You're somebody, uh...uh, whoever-you-are. SPRITE. SO TART AND TINGLING. WE JUST COULDN'T KEEP IT QUIET. REGISTERED TRADE MARK FROM THE SiJJi ineA By Gerald Garcia Texas Aggie baseball coach Tom Chandler’s voice had a sound of disappointment as he talked about the senior members of his team Thursday night during the annual A&M Athletic Department spring fish fry. The Aggie head mentor was talking about Billy Johnson, Billy Crain, Lance Cobb, Steve Hillhouse, Alan Koonce and Neal Thompson. Chandler had every right to show disappointment because these six men who produced one of the most impressive three-year record ever at A&M will not return next season. In the three years these six players wore the Aggies Maroon and White, they compiled compiled a 62-21 record which included a 7-2 mark over the University of Texas and an outright Southwest Conference title in 1964 and a share of another this year. Of the seven victories over Texas, southpaw Hillhouse earned six of them. Hillhouse, Sophomore Player of the Year in 1964 and three times all-SWC selection, won three of those six victories this season when the Aggies did something that has occurred only twice before— sweeping the season series with Texas. “You know, this group of young men will be hard to replace,” Chandler said. “They have always given their best and this year when everybody said we were dead and half buried they rebounded to regain the SWC lead. This just shows what kind of character these men have. A&M will miss them.” Besides Hillhouse, Crain won all-SWC honors two years; Cobb was named to the all-American team his sophomore year and also made the all-SWC team twice. Koonce made the all-SWC team once and Johnson was the recipient of the Wally Moon Award at the spring fete. The Moon award is given annually by the Houston A&M Club to the player who shows the most improvement during the season. And of course Thompson is the man who played center- field so skillfully for the past years. How can Hillhouse who all he had to do was walk on the field against Texas and beat them be replaced ? How can Crain who was an excellent player at any position be replaced? How can Johnson who was a great relief pitcher be replaced ? How can Cobb who showed so much poise at second base and as a batter be replaced ? How can Koonce who won several ball games with home runs be re placed ? How can Thompson who was A&M’s greatest base stealer be replaced ? These questions may never be answered and the 62-21 record they compiled in the three years may never be equalled, but as Chandler and his teams have shown in the past whatever obstacles they have encountered they have overcome. Houston Stops Texas, 5-4 AUSTIN LP) — Tom Paciorek slammed a three-run homer and outfielder G. J. Cantu made a fine defensive play to cut off a Texas rally as Houston defeated the Longhorns 5-4 Thursday in the District 6 NCAA baseball playoff opener. The best-of-three series to determine a representative in the 1966 College World Series at Omaha, Neb., June 13-18, now switches to Houston for a Friday game. If a third game is needed it will be played in Houston Saturday. Paciorek’s home run, which barely drifted over the short, 300- foot right field fence, gave Houston a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning. The Longhorns, who scored twice in the first inning, rallied for two more in the seventh and had the bases loaded when Cantu halted the rally. With only one out he grabbed a line drive hit by Forrest Boyd and then threw perfectly to home plate catching Don Johnson who attempted to score from third base. The Cougars outhit Texas 10-3, and also collected a home run by Cantu. All three Texas hits were doubles. Larry Satcher, who went 5 1-3 innings giving up all the Long horn hits, was the winner, pushing his record to 4-0. Robert Wells, who pitched five innings for Texas, lost, dropping his record to 7-3.
