Atomic Energy
Coop Program
Set For Fall
Texas A&M has joined the
Atomic Energy Commission and
Oak Ridge Associated Univer
sities in a program to stimulate
high school students toward
choosing careers in atomic ener
gy.
President Earl Rudder signed
an agreement Thursday with
ORAU for the program to begin
in September and continue
through May, 1967.
The plan calls for a mobile
atomic energy exhibit, “This
Atomic World,” to be demonstrat
ed at 150 Texas high schools.
Rudder said the exhibit will
call attention to A&M’s capa
bilities in science, especially in
atomic and nuclear areas.
C. M. Loyd, coordinator of
A&M’s National Science Founda
tion Programs Office, will ar
range the exhibit schedule. He
said an experienced science teach
er will be employed as fulltime
exhibit manager. Training will
be provided at Oak Ridge.
The exhibit manager will give
lecture-demonstrations in assem
bly programs, Loyd pointed out.
He also will speak to individual
classes.
Loyd noted the program is an
extension of the Atomic Energy
Commission’s domestic exhibits
program.
The assembly presentation in
volves animated exhibits and sci
entific equipment to show funda
mentals and applications of parti
cle accelerators, fissions, reactors,
fusion, radiation and radio iso
topes. Lectures include atomic
structure, nucleus and radioactiv
ity, radiation biology, fission and
fusion.
