Assistant football Coach Jack
Pardee felt the call of the pros
too great and rejoined the Los
Angeles Rams Wednesday.
An eight-year veteran of pro
fessional football, Pardee re
signed as tutor to Aggie line
backers and defensive backs on
Head Coach Gene Stallings’ year-
old staff.
“He felt it was to his financial
advantage,” commented Stallings,
“if he played another three or
four years. They way they’re
paying for rookies these days,
they ought to pay well for a re
turning veteran.”
Pardee’s contract terms are
unknown, but it is known that his
return fulfills a vow which new
Coach George Allen made when
he took over the Rams. Pardee
anchored the Ram defense, gain
ing all-pro recognition in 1963.
He played football, basketball,
baseball and track at Christoval
High School and made all-state in
six-man football. He played three
seasons at A&M and was an all-
America linebacker in 1956.
Pardee also participated in the
1956 Blue-Gray game and the
1957 Senior Bowl and College
All-Star games following college.
As a professional footballer, he
played on the West squad in the
1964 NFL Pro-Bowl game.
Announced at the same time
but in no way related, is the fact
that all-pro flanker Bobby Joe
Conrad of the St. Louis Cardinals
will help coach the Aggies in
spring training. There was spec
ulation that Conrad would re-

place Pardee as a regular staff
member.
“Bobby Joe will coach the split
ends and flankers in the spring
only,” declared Stallings. “He
probably will play pro ball for
another four or five years. Lots
of college staffs have pro players
help in the spring.”
Concerning the loss of Pardee,
Stallings explained that he will
reshuffle the present staff for
the time being and add another
man after spring training. Spring
drills begin April 14.
Current staff members are
Elmer Smith, Dee Powell, Bud
Moore, Don Watson, Loyd Taylor,
Jack Hurlbut, and Ralph Smith.
Pardee’s duties will be divided
among them.
By LARRY UPSHAW
They battled long but settled
nothing, for the Texas Aggies
and the Minnesota Gophers swung
10 innings for the sake of a 3-3
tie. By mutual consent of the
coaches, the three hour and fif
teen minute batathon ceased at
Kyle Field Thursday and no one
was the worse for wear.
The Texas A&M pitching pa
rade resembled a well-staged
demonstration as five hurlers
walked back and forth from bull-
pen-to-pitcher’s mound-to-be nch.
The Aggies allowed just six hits,
but Coach Tom Chandler wanted
a look-see at those lacking mound
action this spring.
Starter Hank Deviney fell in a
Gopher hole in the top of the
second inning as two singles,, a
walk and a sacrifice fly netted
one Minnesotan lopping across
the plate with the initial run.
Chandler pulled Deviney in the
top of the fourth in favor of
Dickey Valentine, who had
pitched only one inning previous
ly. But a similar fate awaited
Valentine.
Wtih great gusto, Minnesota
pitcher Frank Brosseau feath
ered his own nest, clouting a two-
run homer in the top of the fifth.
And round-trippers were quite
novel as the stiff wind blew in
toward home plate.
The mute Aggie bats suddenly
began to crack as third baseman
Lou Camilli lashed a double and
scooted home after a base hit by
shortstop Mike Arrington for a
3-1 difference with five innings
gone.
With batteries recharged, A&M
slowly began to perk. In the
seventh stanza, outfielder Ricky
Schwartz, second baseman Lance
Cobb, and Camilli walked, and
Schwartz skipped scoreward on
a fielding error by Gopher first
baseman Dennis Zacho. Then the
eighth inning provided the cap
per.
Centerfielder Neil Thompson
outraced a perfect bunt for a hit,
watched catcher Joe Staples slam
a single and rode home on a
Schwartz double to tie up the
works, 3-3.
After nine innings and the
score still knotted, the Gophers
fell three abreast in the tenth.
Then the Aggies’ Staples hit a
one-baser and captured second on
a single by Schwartz.
With pitcher Billy Crain at bat,
Minnesota Coach Dick Siebert
brought centerfielder Tom Boldt
in as an extra infielder to defend
against the bunt. This made
center field free country, but
Crain obliged with a grounder to
force Staples out at third.
Camilli caused heart failure
with a bomber over the right field
wall—just foul. But the cause
died with a double play by Minne
sota and the cold wind plus dark
ness prompted the stopping.
