British Statistician Visits Next Week A British authority on time series analysis of statistical theory will visit the Graduate Institute of Statistics next week. Dr. James Durbin of the Lon don School of Economics will visit the institute Monday and Tues day. By GUS DeLaGARZA Battalion Special Writer “We pay our own way. We re ceive no appropriated funds for operation. The only funds we get come from the student board fees and limited food sales.” This was recently revealed by Fred W. Dollar, Food Service director, who said the Food Serv ice Department is almost a self-contained unit of operation. The Food Service Department has its own bakery, maintenance shops, butcher shops, procure ment section, administrative sec tion as well as its primary activi ties menue planning and food preparation. “We even own and pay for the operation of the vehicles used for various things.” No free foodstuffs are re ceived by the Food Service De partment from the University or anywhere else. Dollar said. The department buys several items such as milk, some beef, eggs, ice cream and cottage cheese that the University has available. In addition, the department pays for its own insurance and added structures (modifications and improvements) such as the remodeled cafeteria and the air conditioning in Sbisa Hall. Student board fees and limited food sales support all these vital activities, Dollar remarked. Lim ited food sales come from the Memorial Student Center cafe teria which is also under the de partment. The Food Service De partment even has to pay rent to the MSC for the space used for cafeteria operation. “Since the student board fees support the Food Service Depart ment, we take the attitude that everything we do is done for the student.” Dollar said. “This may seem harsh in terms that the student does not get what he thinks that he should get. “If we worked for anybody else, we defeat our purpose — student satisfaction is our goal.” With this idea of working for the students, the department seeks to improve each phase of management to better pay its way, Dollar said. There is no profit objective per se, but the department wants to accumulate money for further im provements, he added. “To show a profit we must try to reduce costs.” In investigating further re duction of costs, the department has taken a survey asking other schools about board fees, number of feeding facilities available, type of feeding used and the cal oric value of the menu, Dollar said. “If we find one that is doing a better job, we will try to dupli cate or exceed our present meth od. “The idea is to change our ways to the best.” PROGRAMMERS TRW needs you. Centuries ago the thinking of Galileo, da Vinci, and Newton was thought heretic by many of their contemporaries. But, the test of time has seen such thoughts develop into the technologies of today. Now, in recent time, computer applications through scientific programming have so accelerated the process of problem analysis that the thoughts of today have become the designs of tomorrow. At TRW, we have taken important strides in advancing technology through the use of computer applications. In Houston, adjacent to NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center (the home of Apollo), and at Redondo Beach near Los Angeles International Airport, several hundred skilled TRW programmers are applying their brain-power to further advance the capabilities of computers and computer sciences.
