Aggies Thwart Gophers Perrin Shines In 5-1 Victory By GERALD GARCIA Battalion Sports Editor For people of this area Wednesday was as cold a day as any winter day.. For the Minnesota Gophers It was just like a summer’s day. But when nine innings of action was over, the Goph ers, who are currently on their annual tour of Texas, found out that their bats were as frigid as one of their coldest winter days. Ken Perrin, Texas Aggie sophomore who has never tasted defeat in an A&M uni- from, stopped Minnesota—a team which had scored 18 runs in their last two out ings, both against the Uni versity of Texas — for seven and two-thirds innings as the Aggies won their eleven th game of the season, 5-1. Perrin, who tired in the eighth and was relieved by A&M ace Steve Hillhouse, ran has scoreless inning str ing to 24 and two-thirds by stoping the heavy bats of the Gophers with a good assort ment of curves and a live fast ball. While Perrin was check ing Minnesota, the Aggies pushed across all the runs they needed in the third with the benefit of two Go pher miscues. After Perrin had fanned, Lou Camilli rifled a drive into left field — which would have cleared the fence on a day when the wind was blow ing out instead of in as it was Wednesday. Camilli’s drive did fall in for a two- base hit. When Mike Ar rington grounded to second, Camilli moved to third. He scored as Lance Cobb reached first on an error by Gopher short stop Steve Sch- nider. The Lancer later mov ed to second on an error and scored when Alan Koon- ce dropped a Texas League single into left. When Minnesota threaten in the eighth — all because of Perrin's wildness — Hill- house made Schnider line to Cobb at second for the final out without any damage be ing done, except maybe to Perrin’s pride since he walk ed three men in the inning. The Aggies added insur ance runs in the eighth on doubles by Joe Staples and John Poss and a three-base error by Frank Brosseau, Minnesota’s center fielder, on Arrington’s long drive. Minnesota scored their tal ly in the nineth off Hillhouse — his first earned run of the year — on a walk and two singles by Mike Sadek and Bob Fenwick. The same two teams will meet today at 3 p.m. on the Kyle Field diamond with either Billy Johnson or Hank Deviney going for the Ag gies. The Gopher starter was not announced.
