ever, the helium gas must reach
a temperature of minus 453 de
grees Fahrenheit. That’s colder
than summertime in Siberia.
Liquid helium is used as a sci
entific tool in experiments. The
property of matter is such that,
when exposed to extremely cold
temperatures, its molecular ac
tion is slowed down and thus is
available for closer study.
So far, Rice, the University of
Texas and Louisiana State Uni
versity are the only other ones
in the Southwest which have
cyrostats.
The whole unit cost $15,000.
A&M paid for it, with half the
money coming from the National
Science Foundation through its
grants to graduate schools and
the other half allocated to A&M
by the state legislature.
