C., and three former Peace Corps volunteers will operate an information booth in the Memo rial Student Center, sign and test juniors and seniors interested in assisting people of underdevel oped countries. “We’ll talk to freshmen and sophomores, too,” the attractive blonde said, “but we’ll only sign juniors and seniors.” The chief of volunteer travel said register ing with the Peace Corps isn’t an obligation. Assignment will be tendered following graduation. A two-year foreign service tour with the Corps is invaluable job training for prospective employes of large industrial firms, empha sized Dr. Vance Edmondson of A&M, chairman of the University Peace Corps advisory council. Language training and oppor tunity to do advanced degree thesis research overseas were also listed. A team of Jennie D. Beary, Sam Selkow and Michael Viola will show films and discuss Corps service in a meeting in the MSC Assembly Room at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Edmondson noted. A campus organization. Alpha Phi Omega, sponsors the program. Miss Halley said the Peace Corps is eyeing agriculture stu dents. “A man who has worked on a farm all his life is remarkably suited for teaching the people we are trying to help,” she com mented. Applicants must be no younger than 18. Students who graduate and ac cept assignment are sent to school for eight weeks. Language, area studies and other knowledge to go with basic skill is studied be fore the trainee gets a 10-day leave and goes to his foreign assignment. Corps training sites are in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Instruction is also contracted to universities such as Texas Tech and Hawaii. The Corps pays subsistence and training costs to students in the U. S. and territories and fur nishes living essentials on the job. Remuneration of $75 a month is set aside for the volunteer at completion of the two-year tour. “We have 10,000 in the Corps now,” Miss Halley said, “but we must replace 5,000 every year. We expect to be in another 10 countries by the end of the year. They continually request more teachers.” Community development and institution building are primary jobs performed by volunteers. Model airplane pilots almost beat the usual harbinger of spring out each year as they launch aircraft built during the long winter evenings. Any sunny, mild day will find the modeler and his high-pitched, snarling plane on drill fields near the Memorial Student Center, south of Duncan Dining Hall or any other area large enough for him to “U-control” his man-made “robin.” Junior accounting major Don Spangler of Houston and soph chemistry major Mark Claussen of Humble took to the air this week with Claussen’s glow-plug powered model. Both have flown the mosquito-sized and sounding craft for two years, but Spangler was assisting Claussen in learn ing to rrtanipulate wire-controlled stabilizers. “Others at A&M fly ‘U\ free- flight and radio-controlled planes, but we have ho formal organiza tion,” Spangler said. Fuel for from three to 10 minutes of flying time can be injected into thimble-size tanks. Once the engine is cranked and the ship is airborne, there’s no turning back until the midget powerplant has burned all the fuel. Then the pilot, who pivots the plane about him from 20 yards away, tries to guide his ship back to earth without mishap.
