Picking the top offensive and defensive squads, plus a punter and place kicker, the staff of the Battalion made 14 unanimous choices, including end Dude Mc Lean and punter Phil Scoggins of A&M. The breakdown of players per school on the team is Arkansas 10, A&M, SMU and TU three each, Texas Tech two and Texas Christian and Rice one each. Tommy Nobis was chosen both ways, but counts as one player. Representing A&M along with McLean and Scoggin is lineback er Joe Wellborn, the aggressive senior that led the weekly defen sive charge in the number of tackles made. McLean set numerous SWC and school records for receiving and finished first in the SWC with 60 catches for 835 yards. Scoggin finished first in punting with 88 punts for the season, a record, and a 43.6 average. All-Americans Donny Anderson of Tech, and Tommy Nobis of Texas are two of the Batt’s unanimous choices. Others in the catagory were Bobby Crock ett, Glen Ray Hines, Bobby Bur nett and Lloyd Phillips of Ark ansas, Jim Vining of Rice, Doug January and John LaGrone of SMU and Frank Horak of TCU. The offensive backfield, com posed of the four top backs of any position, was evenly split between the top two finishers in the conference race, Arkansas and Tech. The Hogs placed quarterback Jon Brittenum and fullback Bobby Burnett, while the Raiders listed halfback Don ny Anderson and quarterback Tom Wilson. Among other gridders receiv ing votes in the competition were Gary Moore, defensive halfback, Pete Lammons, defensive end and Diron Talbert, defensive tackle of TU; Gary Cooper, mid dle guard, John Richards, de fensive halfback and Bruce Al ford, place kicker of TCU; Har lan Lane, flanker of Baylor; Chuch Latourette, fullback of Rice and Ronnie South, place kicker of Arkansas. This group of competitors from five of the SWC member schools represents the Batt’s Honorable Mention pool.
