College (Highway 6, N.) at 19th THE BATTALION Tuesday, November 9, 1965 College Station, Texas Page 5 TTI Gets $357,000 Grant For Breakaway Road Signs The Texas Transportation In stitute will conduct a $367,600 study of breakaway signs for highway signs, lights and utili ties, the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads has announced. Fred J. Benson, dean of the College of Engineering, said the study will begin Dec. 1 and is schedule^ for completion May 31, 1967. “The Texas Transportation In- stitq^e has been working on the project on the state level for abo^t two and one-half years,” Dean Benson pointed out: “We are pleased that TTI is getting national support for the study.” TTI’s earlier study was in co operation with the Texas High way Department and the Bureau of Public Roads. Benson said the national study may involve four or five separate research investigations. The BPR announcement ex plained the objective is to de sign a support that will give way easily when struck by a car but will be strong enough to stand up against high wind. Prof Receives $14,400 Grant Dr. Bardin H. Nelson, profes sor of sociology, has received a $14,400 grant from the Agricul tural Development Council. The grant will be used in support of one phase of Research Proj ect S-1578 entitled “An Analy sis of Attitudinal Patterns To ward Agriculture Program De velopment in Selected Foreign Countries.” Nelson will conduct basic socio-cultural studies to under gird program development in certain countries having formal contracts with Texas A&M the Agency for International Devel opment or the Ford Foundation. He plans to initiate work in the Dominican Republic and Thailand during the summer of 1966. He will also spend some time in Syria giving direction to field studies of Bedouins. This research program will enable students from those for eign countries working toward higher degrees in agricultural economics or sociology to con duct research for their disserta tion in their native land. American students working to ward degrees and desirous of careers in foreign service may also conduct their research in one of these countries. Most obvious objective is high way safety. Bureau officials noted single vehicle collisions with fixed objects account for ap proximately 40 per cent of all fatal accidents on rural roads. The BPR indicated the study will be directed also at determing the feasibility of providing safe ty devices to intercept, redirect and stop a vehicle when collision with a sign support is imminent and removal of that support by impact would permit overhead wires and other structures to fall. It will also concentrate on developing a design that will en able signs to be built with low wind resistence. Budgeted amount for the first nine months of the study is $216,000. It is to be met through federal-aid funds from these states, with no matching state Texan To Help Dominicans Raise Farm Standards Nine Texans and their fami lies left last week for the Domi nican Republic to help Dominican farmers raise the agricultural standards of their country. Chosen by the Office of In ternational Programs at A&M, the nine are the first of 11 assigned to that the Dominican Republic for two-year stays to £ive economic and agricultural advice. The men were selected for their knowledge as agriculturists and for their desire to teach the Dominacan new methods of ef fective farming and ranching, Bulletin Board TUESDAY Math Wives Club will meet at 8 p.m. in the Blue Flame Room of Lone Star Gas Co. in Bryan.
