CROWLEY WASHINGTON UP) — House wives crusading for more pea nuts in peanut butter won a pre liminary round Monday, but the real crunch is yet to come. Led by grandmotherly Mrs. Ruth Desmond, president of the Federation of Homemakers, they persuaded federal examiners to at least let them argue that any par containing less than 95 per cent peanuts should be labeled peanut spread, not peanut butter. Peanuts butter tycoons sent their attorneys to battle such a change, which would alter the labels on much of the peanut butter now on the market. They said, in effect, that the women were pulling a fast one; that before now in the proceed ings the idea of a government decree mentioning spread had never been mentioned and was now out of order. The Peanut Butter Manufac turers Association objects that the order would turn back the clock of science; that without modem stabilizers, derived from vegetable oil and other materials, peanut butter would turn rancid quickly. “Moreover, it would stick to the roof of your mouth; it would tear holes in your bread when James Mack, the association’s you tried to spread it,” said managing director.
