^ fu pa L 2 - at re^ Fo ing f Page 8 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Thursday, October 28, 1965 FROM THE Sicleii u%e& By Larry R. Jerden Ags Shoot For Stardom There was recently a debate among these pages about who the real Aggies were. Some said the Corps, some the civilians, others claimed everyone that pays $50 a semester at the Cob lege Station campus is an Ag gie. This column doesn’t seek to enter the fray, but it does wish to bring up one point. Aggies answer challenges. Buddy, we’ve been challenged. Every other year, from our neighboring state to the north east, a host of followers descend upon the small town of College Station to back a football team. They don’t come bragging about spirit, they just show it. We brag a lot. We’re the 12th Man . . . some to the extent of driving to Atlanta or hitch hik ing to Baton Rouge. Why, then, don’t we make a decent showing in Little Rock? When I attended the Arkansas game two years ago, there were no more than 10 Aggies that I saw who made the trip. Its not just the matter of distance, be cause its no further to Little Rock than it is to Lubbock. And we always have a big crowd there. Why, then, the apparent boy cott of the Arkansas game? Its a disgrace that shouldn’t hap pen. The general feeling is this is a “free” weekend. We’ll all be good Ags and listen to our ra dios and take a breather while our team sweats blood against the toughest team they’ll face all year. Just who are the Aggies. Go to Little Rock and count them, you’ll be a bit disappointed. Everyone wants to be called an Aggie, and yet very few want to go the extra mile to be what a real Aggie is. Can the Aggies win? Can they defeat the national power from the Ozarks ? That tale will be told Saturday night in Little Rock before 50,000 fans. How many students at A&M will turn out? COoddAop dCo. ‘Mens Clothing Since 1896” North Gate College Station and Main Street Bryan, Texas The time for meeting the SWC’s number one team comes early this year, Saturday night instead of Thanksgiving. So far, it seems to be without the excitement and build-up that precedes the more tradition- bound of the two games, but if the Aggies are looking for a good ttime to make headlines, their date in Little Rock seems the best bet. Its been a long eight years since the Cadets have emerged the victors in a game with the Hogs, and unless they pull some thing of a miracle, it will become eight and the Aggies will have lost a claim to the record books. The 1939-40 A&M squads won 19 straight, the present record, and Arkansas has amassed 18 going into this week’s meeting. The present A&M record is 2- 4, with a 0-3 conference mark. And the Aggies are physically handicapped. There are no other words to be used. Of those not on the injured list, the majority have some minor something-or- other that may be enough to take the edge off their quickness. On the positive side of the A&M ledger, the Harry Ledbetter -Dude McLean team will again be in action. Ken C a f f e e has been switched from defensive rov er to offensive halfback, and Stallings has noted that, “He has a pretty good knack for hitting those holes, based on his three carries against Baylor.” Phii Scoggin, with his 42-yard punting average, and Glynn Lindsey, the Aggie total point leader, will both be in good shape to continue with their footwork. These two alone form a great part of the A&M defensive and offensive punch. A pre-game rundown of the Razorbacks is almost superflu ous, since they’ve been the sub ject of national radio-TV-press coverage for the last month. Sparked by quarterback Jon Britt enum, the Pig offense has rolled up 2,034 yards total of fense in six games and have av eraged over 32 points a game. The defense, meanwhile, has lim ited opposition to a little less than 13 points a game and a total 1,- 524 yards total offense. An indication of the depth of the Arkansas 11 is Jim Lindsey A pre-season All-America pie!;, he has been running behind Har ry Jones at wingback and carries a 5.4 rushing average.
