Page 8 College Station, Texas Thursday, October 21, 1965 THE BATTALIO Aggies Make Shift To Modified One-Platoon A modified form of one-platoon football will return to the Aggies this weekend as a result of in juries to a number of gridders and the failure of a few players to come up to expectations. Head Football Coach Gene Stal lings made the decision to drop the full two-platoon system after the TCU game. He said, “After the injuries during the TCU game and the fact that some of our players weren’t doing as well as we thought they should, we had to do something to get our best folks on the field all at once.” “Remember when we intercept ed TCU’s pass on the 25 Satur day night?” he asked. “Well, we want to have our best players on the field at times like that so we can move the ball.” He said there wouldn’t be a problem with the players tiring before the opponents two-platoon system due to individual substi tutions. “We’ll actually end up playing more folks this way than before, and we’ll continue to have separ ate kick-off and receiving squads. The aggies had been lucky dur ing their first four contests, and the whole grid picture depended on the first team’s ability to remain unhurt. With the new system, there will be an increase in depth at certain positions. “I feel one group of players that can go both ways when we need them would be more help to us,” Stallings added. There will only be one first team, now composed of 15 men, but the Aggies will continue to have an offensive and defensive separation, with the first string ers being used either way in the clutch. The 15 listed as starters now are Ken (Dude) McLean, offen sive end, defensive halfback; Grady Allen, offense guard, de fensive end; Ken Lamkin, tackle both ways; Tom Hurrah, offen sive tackle, middle guard; Joe Wellborn, center, linebacker; Jer ry Kachtik, guard, end; Robert Cortez, linebacked; John Nilson, both ways at tackle; Ed Breding, both ways end; Harry Ledbetter, quarterback, defensive ha! Bill Sallee, wingback; JerryI'i hols, safety; Jim Kauffman, ways halfback; Dan Schnei fullback, and Ken Caffee, rovei Southwest Conference Football News And Notes Rice last defeated Texas in Austin in 1953* yhen Leroy Fen- stemaker passed to Dan Hart in the final minute of play. Hart, currently coach at Houston Kin- kaid, is in an Austin hospital as a result of a broken leg and shoulder injury suffered ten days, ago after his team scored a Prep League victory over St. Stephens (Austin) . . . Fenstemaker is head coach at Austin Johnston. When it was discovered that Marvin Kristynik had left his contact lenses in his Fort Smith (Ark) hotel room Saturday, Jack Perry, a long-time Texas fan, de parted on the dead run for the Fayetteville airport. Perry took his private jet to Fort Smith and was back with the lenses five minutes before kickoff. Texas Tech goes against SMU Saturday with a 4-1 record, mark ing the first time since 1953 that the Red Raiders have fashioned such a good record in the first half of the campaign. The ’53 Tech team went on to a Gator Bowl triumph over Auburn. A&M Linebacked Joe Wellborn expressed his impression of LSU’s manpower thusly: “I don’t see how they ever lost. Playing against them was just like dig ging a hole in the sand. You would dig some out and some more would fall in.” Tennessee’s deadlock with Ala bama Saturday compounded the incongruity of Bear Bryant’s coaching record against the Vols. It now heads 5-8-4. Texas has been a greater nemesis, however: 1-5-1. TCU Linemen Porter Williams was pleased that he deflected A&M’s pass-for-two out of the reach of Dude McLean, yet he worried all the way to the dress ing room, fearful Coach Abe Mar- ton would “wonder what I was doing back there” on A&M’s conversion bid to go ahead. By Saturday night Humble Fish Thinelads To Open Saturday Friday in College Station the Aggie Fish cross-country team will open its season against Bay lor University, Texas Christian University and the University of Texas. Coach Charles Thomas is im pressed with the Fish and indi cated that they could possibly beat the varsity. John Heffner is the No. 1 man for the freshmen while John Richey and Mike Synyard fight for the second spot. John Conley, Terry Peavy and James Thur mond round out the team. Fish Gridders To Meet Cubs By LARRY UPSHAW Battalion Sports Writer The Aggie Fish attempt to keep charity off the field against the Baylor Cubs at 7:30 tonight at Kyle Field. All proceeds go to the charity fund of the Brazos County Shrin- ers, and the Fish hope to prove to themselves that charity begins at home, as both teams seek their first win of the season. Opening play two weeks ago, the Fish allowed TCU 435 total yards and a 24-7 win, while the Texas Shorthorns slapped a 28-7 loss on the Cubs. Aggie smiles appeared just once, as tailback Roland Rainey returned Wog punt 90 yards for the lone tally. A touchdown pass from quarterback Rusty Clark to end Gilbert Ash supplied the only grins for Baylor fans. While attempting to mend a charitable defense, the Fish hope to better the 78 yards total of fense gained against TCU, as six new faces adorn the offen sive unit. Starting on offense for the first time are guards Ernie Ormi and Larry Gary, tackle Rolf Krue ger, quarterback Bob Long, tail back Roland Rainey and full back Cliff Golden. Tackle Billy Mucha and guard Bill Weaver change starting as signments from offense to de fense. The pro-minded Cubs rely on the aerial game, with Clark pitch ing to Ash and halfback Jackie Allen, while the defense is head ed by hefty tackle Earl Maxfield.
