Lyman J. Hardeman of Bryan, a senior electrical engineering major at Texas A&M, learned in a summer tour of Europe that the world is indeed small. Hardeman, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Hardeman, of Rt. 4 in Bryan, had planned to work in France. His job fell through and he elected to prepare himself for future job opportunities. Surprisingly enough, he had no trouble enrolling for a class in beginning French at the Sor- bonne in Paris. After completing the course, Hardeman traveled widely. He got his first inkling of the shrink ing world while hitchiking. A large family vacationing in two cars gave him a ride to Geneva. “The mother was originally from Chicago,” he said. “She married a Frenchman while serv ing as a Wac in World War II. “They were tremendously nice to me,” he commented. “They treated me like one of the family. Even the three and four year old children corrected my French, though.” Hardeman met four 1965 grad uates of Xavier University in Copenhagen. Three weeks later, he visited with them in Paris. Unusual as these meetings may have seemed. Hardeman ran into the quartet two weeks later, pure ly by accident, in Nice. That night they visited Monte Carlo, the famed gambling casino. Hardeman though Monte Carlo was a dead spot compared with other places of interest. France, Italy, London, Brus sels, Hamburg, Cannes and Ams terdam were toured by the A&M Consolidated High School grad uate. Hardeman felt the summer stu dents he met were generally less serious than full-time students. Many were beatniks, he said. Girls were very understanding of the tight budgets of students, Hardeman recalled. “All the girls of the student class would go Dutch on dates,” he grinned. “Most of the Amer ican girls did, too.” Seeing children two or three years old drinking wine like water made a lasting impression on the Texan. At A&M, Hardeman is caair- man of the Institute of Electri cal and Electronic Engineers, as sociate editor of the Engineer, a student magazine, a member of the Student Engineer’s Council, and a distinguished student.
