Ware Award as the nation’s outstand ing teacher in horticulture. The honor came August 17 dur ing the annual meeting of the American Society for Horticul tural Science at the University of Illinois. He was chosen on the basis of his career in teaching and contributions to the horticul ture industry for 43 years. Brison, a professor emeritus in the Horticulture Section of the Soil and Crop Sciences Depart ment, won the Ware Award on a regional basis in 1962. L. M. Ware of Auburn University is the award sponsor. The long-time educator is na tionally known among farmers, horticulturists and agricultural schools. His former students number more than 7,000, many of whom now hold high positions in their professions. Dr. Morris Bloodworth, head of the Soil and Crop Sciences De partment, said the Ware Award culminates a long list of honors for Brison. In 1958, he received the Gold Pecan Award from the National Pecan Shellers and Pro cessors Association for his role in boosting the nation’s pecan crop value from a $2 million in dustry in 1920 to its present value of more than $60 million. Other honors include the Fa culty Distinguished Achievement Award in 1956 from the A&M Association of Former Students; 1961, Outstanding Professor in Agriculture at A&M; and 1963, FRED BRISON Texas Pecan Growers Associa tion Distinguished Technical Con tribution Award for his research in pecan propagation, storage and management. Brison was an instructor in the A&M Horticulture Depart ment from 1921-23 and was coun ty agricultural agent in San Saba County from 1923-25. He return ed to A&M as an associate pro fessor in 1926, was made a full professor in 1945 and has acted as department head on several occasions. The horticulturist retired in June of last year. He now acts as consultant to the Horticulture Section and operates a 188-acre pecan orchard in Bell County. CAMPUS BRIEFS | MSC To Offer ‘Speed’ Lunch A new “speed lunch special” will be instituted this fall in the Texas A&M Memorial Student Center Cafeteria. “This service is to accommo date people who have short lunch periods,” said food service man ager Don Ingram in announcing the $1 special. Ingram said table service will be evailable from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily. “Customers will be served with in five minutes,” he said. “This program has worked wdll on other campuses. We feel it is needed and will be appreciated here.” ★ ★ ★ Two Air Force captains work ing toward graduate degrees at Texas A&M University recently received commendation medals in ceremonies at the university. Capts. Patrick L. Musmaker of Greenfield, Iowa, and August R. Banknieder of Chicago, 111., won the awards for earlier achieve ments in other assignments. Col. Raymond C. Lee, professor of aerospace studies at A&M, made the presentations. Captain Musmaker was cited for meritorious service as a tac tically qualified combat-ready C- 130 pilot while assigned to the 463rd Troop Carrier Wing, and 314th Troop Carrier Wing, Sew ard Air Force Base, Tenn. He was praised for work in the field of assault airlift, where he dem onstrated his sustained profes sional aerial performance. Captain Banknieder’s medal was for meritorious service while assigned to the 57th USAF Dis pensary, Paine Field, Wash., where he helped establish food inspection and sentry dog pr6- grams. ★ ★ ★ Dr. Sammy M. Ray, director of the Texas A&M Marine Labora tory in Galveston, has been awarded a $7,888 grant for a two- year study of oysters. The U. S. Public Health Service grant, approved by the division of environmental engineering and food protection, is for research on the effects on antibiotics on fungus parasites in oysters. ★ ★ ★ Ronald Lee Jones, an employe of the San Bernard Electric Co operative in Bellville for the past three years, will join the rural electric training section of Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service September 1. Jones will be in charge of elec trical short courses for REA and municipal electric employes. Stu dents attend classes at the A&M Research Annex. ★ ★ ★ Richard L. Puckett will join the Texas A&M Library staff Sept. 1 as head of the circulation depart ment, Acting Librarian R. C. Woodward has announced. Puckett has just completed graduate studies in library science at the University of Okla- home. He is a retired major in the Air Force with extensive service in the Orient as an air intelligence specialist. ★ ★ ★ Dr. James M. Elliott, an in dustrial psychologist, will join the Texas A&M Department of Education and . Psychology. Thq appointment as an assistant pro fessor effective Sept. 1 was an nounced by Dr. Paul Hensarling, department head. ★ ★ ★ Sixty reserve officers from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard and Navy Monday will begin a two-week seminar on electronic computers. Sponsoring the pro gram are the Office of Naval Research, Texas A&M University and local Naval Reserve Research Company 8-3. Fifty-two of the officers com ing here from across the nation are in the Naval Reserve: Two are WAVES. ★ ★ ★ Forty students are expected to register September 12 for the second two-year class in Texas A&M’s Institute of Electronic Science. Chief Instructor L. K. Jonas said three new instructors will be added to his three-man staff. Sixteen students completed the first course which ended this month. ★ ★ ★ Vergil B. Clark, Texas A&M staff member since 1957, will be; come director of physical plant for the University of Wegt Vir ginia Sept. 1. He has served as A&M’s superintendent for con struction and maintenance in re cent months, coming here origi nally to join the Texas Engineer ing Extension Service. ★ ★ ★ R. W. Rotzler, senior process specialist for the Monsanto Com pany in Alvin, has presented a $1,000 check to Dr. Bruno J. Zwolinski, head of the Texas A&M Chemistry Department. The grant is the fifth in five years to the department. Dr. Zwolinski said the unrestricted grant will be used for fellowships within the department and for research aid to graduate students. The selection of Gerald S. Janik, a doctoral student in chem istry, as Phillips Petroleum Fel low for 1965-66 has also been announced by Zwolinski. The fellowship carries a stipend of $2,500. And Texas A&M doctoral stu dent Donald E. Linder, a Yoakum area native, has been named Jefferson Chemical Company Fel low for 1965-66. The award carries a $2,000 stipend for Linder who expects to complete requirements at A&M in 1966 for the Doctor of Philos ophy degree. A&M Facilities Undergo Temporary Schedule Change With the conclusion of the summer session many facilities on the A&M campus will either be closed or will operate on a moderate schedule. In the MSC the cafeteria and dining room will be closed Sept. 1-10, but the fountain room will operate on its regular schedule. Sbisa Hall cafeteria will be closed Saturday and Sunday, and will serve noon meals only on August 30 and 31 and September 1, 2 and 3. The Cushing Library will have regular hours on Thursday, but on Friday it will close at 5 p.m. and on Saturday at noon. The library will be closed on Sunday, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. From September 1 to 3, the Cushing Library will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Sept. 4 it will follow its regular sche dule but it will be closed on Sept. 5 and 6. From Sept. 7 through Sept. 15 it will return to the 8 to 5 p.m. schedule except for Sept. 12 when it will be closed. After Sept. 12 the library will return to its usual schedule. Melvin H.
