A&M’s all-SWC tackle of last season, Ray Gene Hinze from LaVeg-a, played for the West Saturday night in the All-American All-Star g-ame in Buffalo, N.Y. He has sign ed with Buffalo of the AFL , . . Another Aggie gridder of last year, end John Brotherton from Mineola, will be on the coaching staff at Houston Jones High next fall. Bobby Marks, A&M all-SWC end of 1957, is head coach there . . . “I feel that because of the ex perience he has and because of his dedication to football, Elmer Smith will continue to be an out standing coach,” Stallings said. Smith, a tireless worker and knowledgeable football man, has a long storied coaching back ground. In 1965 he will be start ing his 12th season as assistant at A&M, having come here in 1954 to join Coach Paul Bryant’s staff. Grid Book Sale Eight future Aggies, recruited by Coach Gene Stallings and staff last spring, will compete in two high school all- star games this summer . . . Roland Rainey, back from Bonham, will play for the North in the Texas H.S. All- Star game in Dallas. Four Aggie recruits will be on the South squad. They are Gordon Klunkert, tackle from San Marcos; Charlie Riggs, quarterback from Galena Park; Joe Townsend, end from Bastrop and Joe Wood, back from Wal ler . . . Three other Ag recruits will play for Texas in the “Big 33” game against Pennsylvania stars in Hershey, Pa. They are Rolf Krueger, tackle from Bryan; Tom Buckman, end from Fort Worth Carter and Wendell Housley, back from Richardson . . . Coach Stallings and two of his assistants, defensive line coach Dee Powell and offensive line coach Bud Moore, will lecture at the Texas High School Coaching School in Dallas in August . . . James White, sophomore sprinter at A&M this past season, is a scholastic casualty and will not be eligible next year for the Aggie track competition. White anchored the SWC champion Cadet sprint relay team and placed in the 100 and 200-yard dashes. He is a former state champ from Dallas Sunset . . . Tech Grid Clash Hosts Pro Cagersi Texas A&M fans who attend the Aggie-Texas Tech football game October 2 in Lubbock also will have an opportunity to see two of the nation’s top pro bas ketball clubs in action. Preceding the 7:30 p.m. South west Conference football classic, the St. Louis Hawks will meet the Philadelphia 76ers in a 3 p.m. cage clash at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. The twin sports attractions are expected to draw one of Lub bock’s top crowds of the year. The NBA cage contest will fea ture Wilt (The Stilt) Chamber- lain, 7-foot-l Philadelphia center who has led all league scorers for each of his six seasons. An other 76er standout is Lucious Jackson, former Pan American University star who was NBA “R-ookie of the Year” last season. The Hawks, perennial pro title contenders, boast such players as Cliff Hagan, Zelmo Beaty, Len Wilkens and Player-Coach Richie Guerin. He came here from Southern State College in Magnolia, Ar kansas, where he had been head coach eight years, compiling a 57-27 record, including two per fect seasons—10-0 in 1951 and 11-0 in 1952. Centenary College, Shreveport, Louisiana, as backfield coach in 1936 and stayed there until 1942 when he entered the navy. He reached the rank of lieutenant commander during World War II and following his tour of service, he became head coach at South ern State College. and a master’s degree in physical education, the latter from Pea body College in Nashville, Ten nessee. His first coaching job was at Hamburg Arkansas High in 1931, and in two years there, he com piled an 18-2 record. Next, he was an assistant coach at Hen drix College, Conway, Arkansas, for four years. He then went to Born in Casa, Arkansas, Smith was graduated from Danville, Arkansas High and entered Hen drix College at Conway where he became one of the school’s all- time athletic greats. He was a four-year, four-sport performer, starring as a fullback in football. A few years ago he was named one of the ten most distinguished graduates of the college. One of the most popular and respected coaches in the South west, Smith is a top recruiter and works the Northeast Texas area for the Aggies. When appointed assistant head coach of the Aggies, Smith said, ‘Tm deeply honored and appre ciative of the faith Coach Stal lings has shown in me. I will dedicate myself to him and the future of football here at Texas A&M. I feel very strongly that Coach Stallings can get the job done.” A soft-spoken man with a dry sense of humor, Smith has a bachelor’s degree in economics Smith is married to the former Sybil Tucker who is a junior high teacher in the Bryan school sys tem.
