at A&M’s College of Veterinary
Medicine. “Dr. Piermattei felt
the bird would do better with
Mrs. Simmons. We made it a
collar to protect the wing while
it’s healing.”
Mrs. Simmons talked about
“Astronaut Glenn” while he was
in surgery.
“He’s a smart old boy,” she
said. “He talks a lot. When we
left the ranch I put him in a
paste-board box, but he got out
and sat on the back of the seat.
He yelled ‘Hello Pancho' to
truck drivers we passed on the
way to the airport.”
Preliminaries to the operation
were exciting for the talking
bird. He appeared on television
and was photographed by news
men Thursday in Amarillo.
“He’s good natured,” Mrs.
Simmons commented, “he lets the
boys walk him around and en
tertain him. Best of all, he
enjoys birthday parties. He
can do the twist and the frug. 1

Here Tonight
Dr. Ralph B. Long, distin
guished scholar of linguistics,
Thursday will visit the English
Institute at Texas A&M. He is
to give a public lecture on
“Grammar in English Programs”
at 8 p.m. in the Architecture
Auditorium.
Participating in the institute
are 45 teachers of English in

the institute under sponsorship
of the National Defense Edu

Dr. Long, University of Puerto
Rico professor, is frequently
called upon as a lecturer. This
summer he is directing and teach
ing in a linguistics institute at
King College in Bristol, Tenn.
He has appeared as a panelist
with many of the noted experts
on linguistics of this country.
Dr. Long considers his best
book “The Sentence and Its
Parts.” Published in 1961 by
the University of Chicago Press,
it now is in the third edition.
During his 1965-66 sabbatical
year, Dr. Long and his wife ex

The six-week institute ends

The requirements for admission
provide that only persons -who

engineering may participate.
Dr. R. G. Cochran heads the

Department Head
In Philosophy
Dr. John B. Orr of Texas
A&M’s Department of Philosophy
and Humanities has been named

Courses in philosophy have
been “attached” to the dean’s

Hubert said interest in philo
sophy courses of the College
of Arts and Sciences is “evidence
of the expanding programs of

were at the University of New
Mexico.
His current research study is
