We made it a collar to protect the wing while it’s healing.” Mrs. Simmons talked about “Astronaut Glenn” while he was in surgery. “He’s a smart old boy,” she said. “He talks a lot. When we left the ranch I put him in a paste-board box, but he got out and sat on the back of the seat. He yelled ‘Hello Pancho' to truck drivers we passed on the way to the airport.” Preliminaries to the operation were exciting for the talking bird. He appeared on television and was photographed by news men Thursday in Amarillo. “He’s good natured,” Mrs. Simmons commented, “he lets the boys walk him around and en tertain him. Dr. Donald Radioisotope School Held An “enthusiastic’'' group of 16 college teachers from eight wide ly-scattered states are attending the fourth Summer Institute in Radioisotope Technology. The National Science Foundation and U. S. Atomic Energy Commission sponsor the institute offered by the Texas A&M Department or Nuclear Engineering. The teachers study techniques for peaceful use of the atom in varied fields of study. L-ecturea and laboratory sessions through out the day are devoted to nu clear measurements and indus trial applications of radioiso topes. Facilities of A&M’s Nuclear Science Center which includes a large, swimming pool type nu clear reactor are used. Among the college teachers en rolled is Mildea Jean Fox Jr. of College Station. Long, distin guished scholar of linguistics, Thursday will visit the English Institute at Texas A&M. He is to give a public lecture on “Grammar in English Programs” at 8 p.m. in the Architecture Auditorium. Participating in the institute are 45 teachers of English in high schools. Texas A&M holds the institute under sponsorship of the National Defense Edu cation Act. Dr. Long, University of Puerto Rico professor, is frequently called upon as a lecturer. This summer he is directing and teach ing in a linguistics institute at King College in Bristol, Tenn. He has appeared as a panelist with many of the noted experts on linguistics of this country. Dr. Long considers his best book “The Sentence and Its Parts.” Published in 1961 by the University of Chicago Press, it now is in the third edition. During his 1965-66 sabbatical year, Dr. Long and his wife ex pect to do two simple grammars together—one for use in this nation, another for use in His panic America. The six-week institute ends July 16. The requirements for admission provide that only persons -who teach in the physical sciences or engineering may participate. Dr. R. G. Cochran heads the Department of Nuclear Engineer ing and directs the institute. The associate director is Niel B. Poulsen of the faculty. Other A&M professors teach in the in stitute. JOHN ORR Dr. Orr Appointed Department Head In Philosophy Dr. John B. Orr of Texas A&M’s Department of Philosophy and Humanities has been named acting department head. Dean Frank W. R. Hubert said, “Dr. Orr has done an out standing job in designing and teaching our philosophy courses.” Courses in philosophy have been “attached” to the dean’s office for administrative pur poses. Hubert said interest in philo sophy courses of the College of Arts and Sciences is “evidence of the expanding programs of Texas A&M University.” Dr. Orr joined the A&M facul ty last year after completing doctoral studies at Yale Univer sity. His undergraduate studies were at the University of New Mexico. His current research study is entitled “The Concept of Com munity in Certain Neo-Hegelian Systems.” Dr. Orr has completed two pub lications this year. He wrote “The Ethics of Unemployment” for the National Committee on Ethics and Work and “Images of Intervention: the Federal Gov ernment in Industrial Affairs” for “Social Progress.” Chem Wives Club Will Meet Tonight The graduate chemistry stu dents wives club will meet Thurs day night at 8 p.m. in the Brooks Room of the Y.M.C.A.
