Friendly Texans Help Dominicans Citizens of Santiago in the Domi nican Republic have dubbed a cer tain group of Texans living there as “Santejanos.” The city even has a street called “Avenida de Texas,” or Texas Ave nue. Both names are symbolic of the the strong friendship which the Texans have won through their ef forts to push agricultural progress in the Republic. A program is underway here which is a strik ing example of Pan-American co operation at the personal level. The program has resulted in establishment of the Institute Su perior de Agricultura, or the In stitute of Agriculture, near Santi ago and not too far from where Columbus landed in 1492. Santiago citizens and Texans be gan working together about three years ago when representatives of the Asociacion para el Dessarrollo, Inc. (Association for Development, Inc.) approached A&M President Earl Rudder. The Association, a group of civic leaders, wanted to put its ideals of socially responsi ble private enterprise into action. It sought and got A&M’s advice and technical help in setting up a vocational agriculture high school in the Santiago area. Out of this contact came the In stitute of Agriculture. Tomas A. Pastoriza of Santiago, Association president, said A&M has provided valuable advice, especially through Dr. G. M. Wat kins, the University’s director of agricultural instruction.
