Matson will regain his eligibility two days later when he enrolls for the spring semester. A&M was well represented at the annual Super Centex Ban quet in Waco Wednesday night. Head A&M football coach Gene Stallings was the principal speak er and Cadet tackle Ray Gene Hinze took part in the program. The Waco News-Tribune and Tri bune Herald sponsored the event. A&M Professor Chris H. Grone man has returned to the campus after attending the annual con clave of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in Chicago. Groneman was re-elected vice president for District 6. Maroon Gunnen Shellshock Owls SONNY FETHKENHER ... goes for bucket. By MIKE REYNOLDS It just didn’t seem fair, what those Aggie cagers did to Rice last Saturday night, and Coach Shelby Metcalf must have sensed it as he emptied his bench onto Autry Court in the Rice Field- house. But he started too late. The momentum gained by start ers Sonny Fethkenher, Ken Nor man, John Beasley, Paul Timmins and Dickie Stringfellow was not to be thrown to the winds and the Ags went on to win, 93-55. A bunch of ‘scrappy subs kept the injury-ridden Owls at bay until the final horn sounded. A lot of the 4,200 in the crowd fi gured out pretty early that this was not to be Rice’s night and exited after the band had per formed their Latin tempo half time show. In all of the comings and go ings on the court, it would take a rare man to keep his head or his temper. The referees proved the former, calling 56 fouls, 28 on both teams. Two Rice players were the latter, feeling that they were pushed, elbowed or bumped one too many times, and decided it was time to push back. It ended as soon as it started. Rice’s showing against A&M in the Bluebonnet Bowl Tournament, plus their victory over Baylor and near defeat of SWC co-leader SMU must have instilled some hope in the hearts of some of the Blue and Grey’s supporters as Saturday’s crowd was the largest of the season. No doubt could have been in their minds after the tipoff as the AggieS went ahead, were at 2-2, were tied at 5-5 and ft; disappeared from the Owls’ sight. Coach George Carlisle to in any mood for jokes folM his team’s 12th loss in 13 start! “We just got the daylights lit out of us — every way ini world. The story of how ti? got their big lead was on ti boards. “At the half,” Carlisle recalk “they had 16 fields goals sndl of them came on their sect! third and fourth shots. They t ed us rebounding.” Beasley collected 13 of his tea: 53 rebounds which is 13 r: than the Rice Owls could jni all night. “Here they go again. Just 14 last year,” muttered a photopt pher for a Houston paper e he packed his gear and left Ci court to make his paper’s sta deadline. The team and Shelby Mete; hope so too. ★ ★ ★ The Fish cagers won their se: ond straight game to even tin season record at 3-3 at the ti pense of the Rice Owlets im prelim Saturday night. Center Larry Ditto, who hi from Breckenridge, sparked th Fish with 21 points and waste of five Aggies in double figure: Forwards Terry Trippet d Max Mainord scored 19 and ll points, while Guards Kent h drews and Jimmy Lennox ee;: scored 12 in A&M’s second mi- ference win.
