Records Collected
{y A&M Profs
o Help Diggers
Whoever digs the successor to
re Panama Canal proposed by
’resident Johnson will likely refer
rainfall records collected by
A&M researchers.
Voluminous data on tropical rain-
all in Central and South America
las been gathered by A&M mete-
rologists. Collecting the weather
pcords from varied sources in
ountries south of Mexico as part
f the intensive study of tropical
ainfall patterns is sponsored by
he Army Signal Corps.
“The work we are doing should
be quite helpful to our government
in selecting a site. Of course, there
are many factors other than rain
fall patterns,” Assistant Professor
Walter K. Henry said. Also in
volved in the project are Assistant
•rofeSsor John F. Griffiths and
nstructor L. Glenn Cobb. All
ioint out that any use of their
ecords in conection with a new
anal is incidental to their study.
The Panama Canal uses great
olumes of water for the locks
vhile announced plans are for a
a-level canal.
“Highly variable patterns” is one
lescription of rainfall in the tro-
)ics. Data collected by the re
archers shows extreme variations
annual rainfall both by geo-
;raphical location and from year-
-year.
the Junior Engineer Technical
Society March 5 here.
J. G. McGuire, assistant dean of
engineering and state coordinator
for JETS, said Dr. E. E. David
Jr., an official of the Bell Tele
phone Laboratories in New Jersey,
will give the keynote address.
Students will be able to take one
hour tests in two of a variety of
subjects, including mathematics,
engineering science, physics, chem
istry, slide rule, drawing, draft
ing and technical writing.
Tests will be graded the same
day by an automatic grader pro
vided by the counseling and test
ing service at A&M. Awards will
be presented to high scorers at
about 4 p.m., at which time Ken
neth Esmond of Odessa, president
of the Texas Society of Profes
sional Engineers, will give an ad
dress about engineering.
McGuire said pre-conference in
terest has been good, indicating a
sizeable gain over last year’s total
of 350 conferees.

Two photographs and a techni

A recent issue of “Weather”
published by the Royal Meteorolo

A&M will be one of 40 National
Engineering Aptitude Search Cen
ters Jan. 16, announced J. G. Mc
Guire, assistant dean of engineer
ing.
McGuire said approximately 500
students will take the test state
wide, either Jan. 16 or 16.
The purpose of the test, he said,
is to measure aptitudes of high
school seniors for study of en
gineering or science in college.
Tests will be graded by a national
testing firm and returned to coun
selors for interpretation.
The search centers are being
sponsored by the Junior Engineer
ing Technical Society and will be
administered in the Chemistry
Building.
Students from Brazos and eight
surrounding countries will take the
tests.
Fruit For Veterans
Christmas stockings of 1,200 patients at the Veterans
Administration Hospital in Temple were filled with these
apples and oranges being loaded into the truck by P. L.
(Pinkie) Downs Jr., and J. L. Hechinger. Students from
A&M, A&M Consolidated and Lincoln Schools gave the
fruit.
