A&M Cricketeers Bop UT In Finale The A&M cricket team closed out its first season with a resounding nine wicket victory over the Uni versity of Texas Sunday in Austin. The match was a two-inning af fair. In the first inning, Texas scored 34 runs in 10 wickets. The Ags then pushed across 57 runs in nine wickets. Nightly performances will run Thursday through Saturday begin ning at 8 p.m. In the spotlight will be A&M’s own rodeo team which is leading the region in total points in a bid for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Assn, finals to be held later in the school year at Douglas Wyo. The Aggies are 70 points in front of second place Sam Hous ton State Teachers College. Pan American College of Edinberg is in third place. Other college teams slated for the program are Stephen F. Aus tin, East Texas State, North Tex as State University, McNeese State, Northwestern Louisiana, Southwest Texas State, Wharton Junior College. Texas Christian University, Lamar Tech and Alvin Junior College. Riding and roping events in the NIRA approved western show, which even includes girls, are bare back bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, bulldogging, tie-down calf roping, bull riding, ribbon roping, girls barrel racing and girls goat tying. Aggie rodeo team members who Weightlifters Plan Contest A weightlifting contest, spon sored by the Central Texas Weightlifting Assn., will be held May 16, in Hensel Park at 4 p.m. Two events will be on the program —the bench press and dead lift. Henry Heatherly, chairman of the contest, said that about 25 en tries will be on hand from Univer sity of Texas, A&M, Bryan, Hous ton and Galveston. Heatherly not ed that entry into the competition is still open. “We are aiming the competition to the intermediate and novice weightlxfter,” he said, “and we will accept anyone in the contest.” Judges will be Heatherly, Sam Dwyer and Terry Todd of Austin. will be in the arena, on their feet or off, will be Bob and Wes Rob inson, both in bulldogging and tie down and ribbon roping; Jack Tay lor, bulldogging and tie-down and ribbon roping; Jay Jones, bulldog ging and tie-down and ribbon rop ing; John Maxwell, bare back bronc riding; and John South, sad dle bronc riding and bulldogging. Wes Robinson leads the region in tie-down roping while Jones is second in the region in bulldog ging. The Aggie rodeo will feature stock from the Sloan Williams ranch of Wharton. Judges will be Wayne Foster of Beeville and Cur tis Burlin of Conroe. Admission to the performances is adults, $1.25; students, $1; and children, 50 cents. This year’s Aggie rodeo sweet heart is Sonja Oliphant of Poteet. Yogi Berra was the youngest catcher ever voted the most val uable player award. He was 26 when he won the American League version of the award in 1951. He also won the honor in 1954 and 1955.
