Physicist Belittles
Laser Weapons
Industrial physicist Herbert
Trotter Jr., who developed one of
America’s most important weapons
of World War II, said at A&M
University Wednesday that laser-
ray guns as weapons are strictly
for the funny papers.
“Rifles are much more effective
than Buck Rogers’ weapons,” Dr.
Trotter told a Graduate Lecture
audience.
The chairman of the board of
General Telephone and Electronics
Laboratories, Inc., developed the
V-T or proximity fuze in 1945.
He said it would take half of
this country’s electrical generating
plants to produce a light beam to
melt the nuclear warhead of one
ballistic missile.
