I Page 6 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Thursday, April 16, 1964 •X X* Shelby Catches Another Prize By MAYNARD ROGERS Battalion Ass’t Sports 'Editor Coach Shelby Metcalf, who has yet to try gathering recruits for the Special Forces in Yiet Nam, has added another prize prospect to his 1964-65 freshman basketball team. Latest to sign a letter-of-intent to Aggieland into Metcalf’s flock is Max Mainord, a 6-414 jumping jack from Greenville, who was one of the most sought-after schoolboy MAX MAINORD stars in the state. Mainord’s John Henry on the dotted line brought Shelby’s group to nine. And that little baseball- type number adds up to a fair country ball club. The average height is a little over 6-214, and the point average per player, on a high school career basis, is over 19 points. Those figures may add up to another Southwest Conference title for the Aggie coach. Metcalf, after signing Mainord, said, “Mainord is a blue-blue chip- per. I consider him one of the very best players in the state. He has tremendous leg spring and will be the finest jumper at Aggieland since Kelly Chapman.” The Greenville star, who has high jumped 6-5, was all-state in class AAA two years, all-district three years, most valuable player in the East Texas tournament the gHH past two years and averaged more than 17 points per game for three seasons. A&M was not the only institute of higher learning to haunt Main ord until the great coup with Shelby. Some 40 colleges and uni versities sought the fellow who made the coaches eyes pop. The list included SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, Houston, Baylor, Arkansas, Oklahoma, North Texas and East Texas. Mainord will join a squad this fall which will include: Sonny Fethkenher, 6-6, Dallas; Johnny Duncan, 6-7 ^ San An tonio; Jim Burgess, 6-5, Arbyrd, Mo.; Johnny Cosby, 6-4 1 / 4, Milford; Buzzy Myatt, 6-5, Abilene; Jimmy Dale Lenox, 6-2, Clear Creek, League City; Kent Andrews, 6-0, and Keith Andrews, 5-10, the twins from Dry Creek, La. Koonce Leads Maroon Hitting In League Action Latest A&M baseball statistics show Allen Koonce leading the squad in hitting in Southwest Con ference action. -Koonce is swatting the ball at a sparkling .500 clip. Sophomore Lance Cobb is close be hind with a .480 average. Koonce is also a sophomore. Senior Bill Hancock has 10-for- 22 and a .455 average. George Hargett is hitting .381. Cobb and Bill Grochett pace the club in runs scored with seven each. Shortstop Jerry Ballard has six while Koonce has tallied five. Cobb is the top slugger with 24 total bases coming on six doubles and two home runs among his 12 hits. Hancock has four doubles and 14 total bases. Koonce has a pair of four-baggers and 13 total bases. Hancock is the top runs-batted- in man- with six in seven games while Cobb has five. Hancock also leads the team in stolen bases with three and walks with four. Four players show a perfect record with ,the glove among the regulars. Centerfielder Cobb, first sacker Frank Stark, right-fielder Billy Crain and right-fielder Robert McAdams are fielding 1.000. The Maroon is hitting at a team clip of .288, including 21 doubles and six home runs. GRADUATING SENIORS —are you in need of a car? A&M will be shooting for a vic tory over the Raiders who hold second place in Southwest Conference standings, one half game ahead of the Aggies. Cricket Club To Host Dallas Here Sunday The A&M Cricket Club will host the Dallas County Cricket Club in an exhibition match at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, A&M Coach John Griffiths announced. The match will be played on the main drill field in front of the Memorial Student Center with play scheduled from 11:30 a.m. until a “luncheon interval” at 1 p.m. Play will be resumed at 2 p.m. “We are told they have a very good team,” Griffiths said of the Dallas club. The Aggie-UT game here last Saturday ended with a score of 45 runs but 10 wickets lost by the Longhorns while the Aggies scored 47 runs and lost only two wickets. In cricket the loss of a wicket is comparable to an “out” in base ball. The Aggies lost earlier to the Longhorns in a cricket match at Austin. Members of the Texas A&M team are students from England, India and Pakistan. Griffiths, an Englishman and devoted cricket fan and statistician, teaches in the A&M Department of Oceanography and Meteorology.
