Page 4 College Station, Texas Tuesday, March 3, 1964 THE BATTALION ‘We’ve Got A Piece Of It’-Robinette UT Beats Ags, Owls In Meet mmm Aggie weight man Danny Rob erts paced A&M’s cindermen with wins in the shot put and discus Saturday at the Rice, Texas and A&M triangle track meet here, but Coach Jack Patterson’s first Long horn team finished with the most points. Texas compiled 67% points to 53 for the Aggies while Rice posted 47%. Roberts set a record in the shot put with a heave of 58-9, the only new standard for the cold, windy day. His winning discus effort was 164-7%. Two Maroon freshmen shared the limelight in exhibition perform ances. Randy Matson put the shot 61-4% and Mike Schrider leaped 6-6 in the high jump. Three other records went on the books because they were new events—the 220-yard dash around a curve, three-mile run and 440- yard hurdles. Bobby May of the Owls was high point man for the meet with 10% credits. The Rice senior took first in the 120-yard high hurdles in 14.3, won the 440-yard hurdles in 55.1 and ran a leg on Rice’s second place 440-yard relay team. The Longhorns nabbed five first places and shared another while A&M took four firsts and tied for two more. Rice won five firsts and one tie. Other Aggies claiming wins were John Collins, tie for first in the high jump; Bobby Brown, broad jump; Richard Hall, tie for first in the 100-yard dash; and Jerry Anderson, 440-yard dash. Collins shared first in the high jump with Bob Beck of Rice. Both men cleared 6-0. Collins also placed fourth in the broad jump with A 21-9 leap. Brown, the 1963 Southwest Con ference freshman champion, took the broad jump with a 23-2% effort. Hall was clocked in the 100 at 9.9 for a tie with James Cowhig of Texas. Hall also finished fourth in the 220-yard dash and teammate Robert Martin was nosed out for second place with a 21-9. Anderson easily took the 440 with a 48.3 and A&M’s Ted Nelson ran fourth in that event with a 49.1. The Aggies completely domi nated the weights and took all but one place in the shot put and discus. Besides Robert’s winning throw in the discus, David Glover placed second, 161-2%; Bill Ward cap tured third, 137-1; and John Schwarzenbach placed fourth, 136- 4. In the shot put, Texas’ Charlie Jordan was second with 49-1, while A&M’s John Steffek placed third at 48-3 and Aggie Bill Ward was fourth with a 45-4 toss. Gene Westmorland finished fourth in the 880-yard run for A&M and Dan Meadows and Gary Reeves placed third and fourth in the javelin. The Aggie mile relay team fin ished in second place with a 3:18.1. Ags Clinch Title Tie; Beas Breaks Record BIG MEN BIG WINNERS Danny Roberts (left) breaks shot record . . . . . John Beasley breaks rebound record. By JIM BUTLER Battalion Sports Editor With Bill Robinette swinging the lasso, the Aggie cagers corralled the SMU Mustangs Friday night, 75-70, and in the process latched on to at least a share of the South west Conference basketball title. The 6-7 senior from Port Arthur tallied a personal and team high of 17 points in pacing the Cadets to their 11th conference victory a- gainst a single loss. The win kept the Aggies atop the loop standings with a two-game lead over Texas Tech, 87-86 winner over Arkansas Saturday. ROBINETTE HIT five straight shots from outside the circle to bring the Maroon from a one- point halftime deficit to a seven- point lead. The event that set Aggie fans aglow with hope for the future was John Beasley’s record-breaking re bound pace. The 6-8 center from Kildare pulled down 13 rebonds to give him 223 for the season and shatter Jerry Windham’s mark of 222 set last year. In the 160-yd. freestyle relay, the Fish team of Jerry Keating, Clint Miller, John Abbott, and John Cleaves won in 1:10.4 to Texas’ 1:11.7. The University varsity squad completely dominated proceedings in the night contest as they won all but two major events. The two events won by the Aggies were diving and 500-yd. freestyle. Paul Ouellette downed Frank Bergen in the latter contest with Ouellette swimming it in 6:18.4. Bergen came in second place and happened to be one of Ouellette’s teammates. In the 400-yd. freestyle relays, the visiting Longhorns set a pool record of 3:30.0. Swimmers in the relays were George Spear, Bill Alsup, Andy Smith, and Jim Graves. Texas’ George Speer set a pool record of 2:08.1 in the 200- yd. butterfly. He was followed by his teammate Frank Stokes and Aggie Mike Offner. Offner also placed in the 200-yd. breaststroke finishing behind win ner Carroll Henderson of Texas. Henderson swam the distance in 2:27.2. The final standings showed the Longhorns downing the Aggies by a 65-29 margin.
