Ifcxas Thursday, February 27, 1964 THE BATTALION Ste, Thinclads Host Triangle Meet Here Saturday Matson Slated In Exhibition The Aggie cindermen will kick off the outdoor track and field campaign here Saturday in a tri angle varsity meet with Rice and the University of Texas. Field event start at 3 p.m. and running events one half hour later. In an added attraction, fantastic freshman Randy Matson will give an exhibition in his specialty, the shot put. It will be the first oppor tunity for A&M fans to see the state champion perform in Kyle Field. Tossing from a new ring re cently built within the stadium to give onlookers a better view, Mat- son will try to beat his Texas record of 62-5. AGGIE TRACK MENTOR Coach Thomas’ cindermen open home action Saturday. Also on the agenda is pole vaulter Fred Hanson, Rice’s Olym pic hopeful, who will compete un attached. Hanson cleared 16 feet several times in 1963. Possum Walk Star Gains Momentum Though in his first year on the Aggie varsity, John Reynolds is fast becoming the most popular player in the squad. The common chant from the fans in the late stages of a game is “We want Reynolds.” The 6-3 guard from Possum Walk has gained his popularity for his often rowdy nature and clown ing around. But few fans realize the talent and potential underlying that spirit. “I have confidence in John,” Coach Shelby Metcalf says. “He’s going to be a real fine ball player. Even when he was sitting on the bench and not playing, he worked just as hard as the boys ahead of him. “Now with his improvement, we’re able to play 10 men a game instead of nine. And he just keeps getting better all the time,” Met calf added. In Metcalf’s book, Reynolds is a “tremendous competitor.” This is understandable when you hear “Sports Car Center” Dealers for Renault-Peugeot & British Motor Cars . Sales—Parts—Service :“We Service All Foreign Cars” 1422 Texas Ave. TA 2-4617 about Reynolds’ five brothers and five sisters. Basketball trainer Roy Don Wil son, the Bard of the Brazos and A&M’s answer to Cassius Clay, wrote this poem about Reynolds. The Hatchet Man He tortted out on the basketball floor And the fans gave out with a mighty roar. They knew the game wasn’t go ing to plan When Metcalf sent in the Hatchet Man. He ran down the court kind of rough and rowdy And if he spoke at all, he just said “Howdy.” He travelled to the games wear ing black and white And just like Sonny, his stare was a fright. To some he compared with Beas as the jester, But to his teammates he was the great protector. Folks all about inquire of his hometown. When told Possum Walk, they seldom frown. It is true asset to be one of his friends. No matter what he’ll stick to the end. His talk is country and the truth is his word, A poem of a finer guy you never heard. Slated to run for the Aggies in the 440-yard relay are Robert Martin, Pat Mitchell, Richard Hall and Ted Nelson. Nelson will also be seen in the 440-yard dash along with Jerry Anderson. Running against them will be Rice’s Jimmy Ellington and Charles Barnhil of Texas. Hall will run with Jimmy Tarr and Art Johnson in the 100 while Hall and Martin vie in the 220 against the Longhorns’ Keith Owen, national junior college 220 champion. Gene Darby, Rice’s sprint ace, will also be in that event. Sophomore Don Kooser will go in the high hurdles against Long horns James Cooper and Steve Sansom, and Rice’s Southwest Con ference winner Bobby May. May will also compete in the 440-yard high hurdles against A&M’s com petent John Collins. In the mile run, Texas’ Richard Romo will be shooting at the meet record of 4:08.7. The Longhorn star posted a 4:05 last season as a freshman. A&M’s big Danny Roberts will be heaving for his old meet record of 57-1 in the shot put with team mate Bill Ward. Roberts and Ward will also be in the discus along with David Glover for the Aggies. In the high jump, Collins and Cecil Wood will perform for the Aggies. Collins holds the meet standard at 6-614. Collins will also be in the broad jump along with Bobby Brown, A&M’s SWC freshman champ, and Rice’s 24- foot man, Jack Weldon. Rice will also send Warren Brat- loff in the pole vault and Ed Redd in the javelin. 20*7° DISCOUNT Off Our Regular Prices TO: A&M STUDENTS—STAFF—EMPLOYEES The Finest In . * Laundering * Cleaning To Obtain Discount You Must Present This Card With Your Clothing and/ or Linens. .SAVE If You Do Not Have a Card Either Of Our 3 Locations Will Issue One on Demand.
