Semifinal Rounds Produce Finalists By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer Sixteen teams vie for final spots in Texas schoolboy football’s next to the last go-round this week. The seers say those left when the firing ends will be Amarillo Tascosa, Corpus Christi Miller, Graham, LaMarque, Dalhart, Li berty, Albany and Hallsville. If that’s what happens, then the finals next week will be: AAAA-Tascosa vs. Miller. AAA-Graham vs. LaMarque. AA-Dalhart vs. Liberty. A-Albany vs. Hallsville. EIGHT OTHER schools hope to make these predictions go awry. Chances are that part of them will succeed. Garland challenges Tascosa in the only AAAA game matching unbeaten teams. Garland has the guns, particularly with Danny Sims, the talented field goal kick er. The game could be that close- decided by a field goal. GARLAND ONCE won the state championship with that same weapon. Spring Branch, unbeaten but once tied, challenges Corpus Christi Miller. It could be quite a challenge, tool Both teams hold decisions over Corpus Christi Ray, indicating they are virtually equal. CORSICANA, undefeated and untied, is the stumbling block of the mighty Graham Steers, who did what no other team could do over almost three years-beat Dumas. The other AAA semifinal match es Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, runner- up last year to Dumas, with La Marque, with its,, mighty runner, Norman Bulaich. LAMARQUE is the state’s top scoring team. It has rolled up 473 points in 12 games. Pharr- San Juan-Alamo has been tough er on defense. Dalhart flings a 13-0 record with 455 points against Rockwall, a team that has shown it can get off the floor and come back like the wind. Rockwall lost to Lake Highlands 20-12 in early season then crushed Highlands 40-0 in the state playoff. LIBERTY runs into Missouri City Dulles. Liberty has romped to 431 points-160 more than Dulles in an equal number of games. Albany faces Petersburg, un beaten but tied. Albany lost to Class AA Olney 8-6 to open ]the season. HALLSVILLE, the sensation of East Texas, faces George West, the power of the South, in the other A semifinal. Hallsville has the best defensive record of all playoff teams, yielding only 33 points in 13 games. Here’s how they look: AAAA—Amarillo Tascosa v s. Garland at Amarillo Saturday, 2 p.m. — A vote for Garland. Spring Branch vs. Corpus Christi Xmas Tree Sale Set By CS Lions Club The College Station Lions Club has started its 12th annual Christ mas tree sale. The chairman for the sale is L. E. McCall. McCall said that he has 680 trees for sale. The tree lot is located next to McCall’s Enco Service sta tion, at 813 Highway 6 at the East Gate area. Brown Loses Lead In NFL Scoring NEW YORK (A*) _ The New York Giants, pacesetters in the Eastern Conference of the Nation al Football League, have no kick coming as far as Don Chandler’s performance this season is con cerned. The same applies to the Balti more Colts and Jim Martin. The latest NFL statistics, re leased Wednesday, show that Chandler and Martin have moved past Cleveland’s Jimmy Brown in the league’s scoring race. While Brown was held score less last weekend, Martin scored 11 points on two field goals and conversions in the Colts’ 41-10 romp over the Minnesota Vikings. Chandler had eight points on one field goal and five points—after while the Giants were mauling Washington 44-14. SPORTS Rice Hits 102, Tops Fla. St. By The Associated Press Rice salved Southwest Confer ence pride a bit by overpower ing Florida State 102-81 in an in tersectional basketball game Wed nesday night. Utah whipped Texas A&M 98- 71, however, and that left the conference still trailing non league foes. Outsiders have post ed 15 victories, five more than the Southwest defenders have managed. Florida State moves on to play Texas Christian at Fort Worth and Southern Methodist is on the road for a game with Iowa at Iowa City Thursday night. Paced by the 30-point output of Larry Phillips, the Rice Owls downed visiting Florida State with comparative ease although 6-foot-10 Rice center Kendall Rhine was on the bench nearly half the game. Rice, led 48-40 at halftime. Rhine was charged with his fourth foul 2:04 before the inter mission and the Owls used him sparingly there after. He still contributed 24 points to the Rice total.
