Fertilizer, Clay Important To Athletic Field Grasses Ample amounts of fertilizer and calcined clay were described here Wednesday as big steps in de veloping and maintaining athletic field grasses. The materials and application methods were outlined by Dr. Bill Daniel of the Purdue University Agronomy Department and a speaker at A&M University’s 18th annual Turfgrass Conference. Daniel said fertilizer is the “economic key” to force grass growth and to produce the density desired for all athletic events. He described calcined clay ag gregate experiments which have speeded water movement down through the soil so that a field can be used shortly after rain or irrigation. Vertical slits are cut into the soil, and the clay is sifted into the slits. To reduce soil compaction, a common problem on athletic fields, Daniel prescribed use of rice hulls or ground corn cobs. The materials decay and loosen the soil. The agronomist touched on ex periments underway at Purdue to warm athletic field soil by placing a gridwork of electric heating wires, into the ground. The sys tem, operating similar to an elec tric blanket, warms the soil and keeps grass growing longer in cool weather. About 225 managers of golf courses and parks attended the conference, which began Monday and ended at noon Wednesday. Sponsors are A&M University and the Texas Turfgrass Association. Another speaker, Dr. Marvin Ferguson of College Station, Mid- Continent director of the U. S. Golf Association, Green Section, said home lawns represent the greatest use of turf in Texas. Bermuda grass covers 41 per cent of Texas lawns, he pointed out. Saint Augustine is 56 per cent, and 3 per cent of the lawns are in other grasses, such as buf- falograss, carpet grass, centipede and Zoysia. 207o discount * Off Our Regular Prices TO: A&M STUDENTS—STAFF—EMPLOYEES The Finest In . * Laundering * Cleaning To Obtain Discount You Must Present This Card With Your Clothing and/ or Linens. ...
