Poultry Scientists On Cataract Trail Two A&M University poultry scientists are hard on the trail of an elusive quarry: the relation ship, if any, between eye cataracts in turkeys and cataracts in humans. Dr. T. M. Ferguson and Dr. J. R. Couch have noted physical simi larities of the turkey and human eyes, and they can e v e n know what causes turkey cataracts and how to avoid the trouble. But then ike Criterion Oxford EDITIONS OF THE Revised Standard Version OF THE Holy Bible Come in and let us show you a complete line of these superb Bibles . . . produced with the care and crafts manship befitting an Oxford Bible. THE OXFORD ANNOTATED BIBLE OXFORD RSV TEXT BIBLES OXFORD RSV REFERENCE BIBLES The Exchange Store the similarity comes to a frustrat ing halt. Cataract cause in humans remains a mystery. The scientists have known for some time that the eye lens opaqueness known as a cataract can be brought on in turkey em bryos by simply restricting Vita- min-E in the diet of parent birds. The ailment seems to be peculiar to embryos and does not show up after birds are hatched, even when the vitamin is missing. Ferguson said interest in the basic research problem of cataract formation grew out of a study of effects of Vitamin-E in improving practical rations. Vitamin-E is commonly added to turkey breeder rations today, and researchers feel this is due in part to their work in nutrition. Logic calls for people to make sure their diet is Vitamin-E en riched to avoid eye cataracts. Un happily, it just doesn’t work that way. The cataract remedy in tur key embryos is not the remedy for humans. But still there must be a rela tionship somewhere, Ferguson be lieves. Here is what, he and Couch have found so far: Vitamin-E deficient turkey em bryos develop through a 28-day incubation period but don’t hatch. They have large-bulging, white spotted eyes, (cataract); swollen legs, and a bump on the back of the neck and head caused by edema and hemorrhage. Ferguson and Couch, collaborat ing with Dr. R. H. Rigdon, pathol ogy professor with the University of Texas Medical School in Galves ton, have learned turkey eyes and human eyes have certain similari ties. Turkey Shoot Set For Annex The annual turkey shoot spon sored by the Range and Forestry Club will be held Dec. 8 and 15, at the Research and Development Annex from 1 p.m. until dark. According to Gary Spence, co ordinator of the shoot, there will be rifle, shotgun and pistol events. Turkeys will be given to the win ner of each event. Events are 75 cents each, and tickets may be purchased from any member of the Range and Fores try Club or at the turkey shoot. At the conclusion of the shoot a .22 automatic rifle and a turkey will be awarded the top marksmen. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. With out a strong Church, neither de mocracy nor civilization can sur vive. There are four sound reasons All is not lost with one failure. As any bowler knows, it’s worthwhile to achieve a goal on the second try. The Church was not founded for people who are perfect. It is for men and women who would strive, despite their shortcomings, to meet life’s moral and spiritual challenge. SANITARY Farm Dairies why every person should attend services regularly and support the Church. They are: (I) For his own sake. (2) For his children’s sake. (3) For the sake of his com munity and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material sup port. Plan to go to church regu larly and read your Bible daily. Someone has called Christianity the religion of another chance. Jesus, after all, placed greatest emphasis on God’s forgiving love. And He urged men to grasp present oppor tunities despite past failures. Earnest Christians today are still discovering in thrilling ways what man, inspired and strengthened by God, can really accomplish. And some of those whose lives have been enriched with faith and courage once wondered — as perhaps you are wondering — whether to give religion another try.
