THE BATTALION Page 4 College Station, Texas Thursday, November 7, 1963 Building Dedication Scheduled Sunday Dedication services for the new $70,000 Wesley Foundation at A&M University will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, the Rev. John Combes, foundation director, an nounced. Bishop Paul E. Martin of Hous ton will deliver the dedicatory ser mon and dedicate the building. He will be among the ministers and laymen who will speak during the dedication. The new building, contemporary in style, includes a chapel, class room, library-conference room, pastor’s study, work area, lounge and kitchen facilities. The interior includes 3,256 square feet. The new facility replaces a frame structure that was placed Franke To Lecture To Corsicana High Harold Franke of the A&M Uni versity Department of Animal Husbandry will speak to Corsicana high school vocational agriculture teachers at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Franke’s talk is titled “Selec tion of Live Animals for Modern Meat.” A. B. Childers of Waco, Area 8 vocational agriculture supervisor, said the Corsicana meeting is part of an in-service educational pro gram planned by teachers in the district. He said 19 teachers will attend. on the church grounds in 1923. For years the old building served both the Wesley Foundation and the A&M Methodist Church. Cost of the new building in cludes $5,500 worth of furnishings, the Rev. Mr. Combes said. The foundation director also teaches at A&M and is one of the campus pastors. The Singing Cadets will partici pate in Sunday’s ceremonies. Other speakers include the Rev. Bill Bailey of Bryan’s Wesley Methodist Church, the Rev. Byron Lovelady of A&M Methodist and the Rev. T. Miller Smith of St. Paul Methodist in Bryan. Also scheduled to speak are Don ald Simons, representing A&M; Mrs. Raymond Reiser, director of the Hillel Foundation and the Campus Religious Workers’ Asso ciation; the Rev. Charles Laing, director of the Texas Methodist Student Movement, and Darrell Smith, A&M Wesley Foundation president. Presentation of keys to the building will be made by Carl But ler, Jr., president of B-W Con struction Company of Bryan and E. Earl Merrell, Jr., architect. Boyd Porter, building committee chairman, and Robert Schleider, Wesley Foundation board chair man, will participate in the cere mony. Open house will follow the wor ship service. Doyle Graves, Family Finish Pakistanian Trip Prep School Doyle Graves, his wife and son completed one of the most unusual courses at A&M, Wednesday. In preparation for a two-year stay in East Pakistan, they spent four hours a day for four weeks learning about that country’s cul ture, economics, agriculture and, most important, the Bengali lan guage. The language of Bengals is a major part of a orientation pro gram that has been under way since 1960 at A&M University. Bengali is taught by Dr. Jack A. Dabbs of the Department of Mod ern Languages, with the help of a native East Pakistanian, Mrs. De- lara Achmed. Dr. Dabbs prepared the language course during a trip to East Pakis tan in the summer of 1960, with the aid of professor Rashid and higher teachers in Dacca College in East Pakistan. The easiest way to learn it is by constant conver sation. Ransom To Speak At Prison Exercise Dr. Harry H. Ransom, chancel lor of the University of Texas, will be the principal speaker at the high school graduation exercises for 375 inmates of the Texas De partment of Corrections Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Reconciliation at the new Ellis Unit near Riverside, 15 miles northeast of here. The class is the largest in the history of the program. Other honored guests will in clude members of the Texas Board of Corrections, William Heath of Austin, Chairman of the Board of Regents, University of Texas, and Joe Yates, Rockdale, Alcoa Plant Manager. Following the program, which begins at 2 p.m., there will be a reception for inmate graduates and their visiting relatives. Commenting on Dr. Ransom’s scheduled appearance, Dr. George J. Beto, director of the Texas De partment of Corrections, said, “The willingness of the chancellor of the University of Texas to ad dress these graduates is recogni tion of the importance of the pris on’s educational program.” According to Alonzo Langley, Director of Education, Texas De partment of Corrections, about 2800 high school diplomas have been issued to inmates since the beginning of the Texas Training Institute, a division of the Texas Education Agency.
