THE BATTALION Thursday, October 24, 1&63 College Station, Texas Page 3 Woman’s World Cooking Is Fun , By Cecily Brownstone CHINESE SUPPER Chicken Broth Crisp Crackers Chow Mein Steamed Rice Pineapple Rings Almond Cookies Tea ALMOND COOKIES 1 and one-third cups sifted flour T4 teaspoon salt 14 cup each vegetable shortening and magarine 14 cup superfine granulated sug ar 14 teaspoon almond extract 1 egg, separated 24 whole balanced almonds Sift together the flour and salt. Cream shortening, magarine and sugar; beat in almond extract and egg yolk extra well. Gradually stir in flour mixture. Using about 1 tablespoon for each, roll dough into balls and flatten slightly; mixture will be dry. Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheet; press an almond in the center of each, lightly presing together the edges that crack. Beat the egg white (less than half of it will be needed) until foamy through-out; brush over top of cookies. Bake in a moderate (350 degrees) oven until lightly tinged with brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove with spatula to wire rack to cool. Store in tightly covered container. Makes 2 dozen. WORKING FOR MASTERS Egyptian woman is first poultry science co-ed. Egyptian Woman Is Number One An Egyptian woman is the first co-ed to enroll in the Depart ment of Poultry Science. She is Mrs. Ferial A. Abd El- Magnid, who is completing her masters degree in poultry product ion. Her husband, a graduate stu dent in horticulture, is working on his doctorate. Mr. and Mrs. Abd El-Magnid received their undergraduate de grees at Alexandria University in Alexandria, Egypt. Abd El-Mag nid came to the United States for the spring semester of 1960. He was enrolled in the University of Maitre D ^hotel To Discuss Methods Of Entertaining Oleg Gofman, maitre- D’hotel at Houston’s Sheraton-Lincoln, will give his views on entertaining at the Friday’s meeting of the A&M Women’s Social Club. Gofman, who came to this coun try five years ago from France, will try to show how it is possible to be a cook and a hostess at the same time. The meeting will begin at 2:45 p.m. in the Memorial Student Cen ter Ballroom. Gofman’s presenta tion will include table settings, party and menu settings, and the preparation of a flaming entree. The entree, probably will consist of a steak dianne and a wine sauce that a hostess can prepare right in the dining room. Gofman has been in the res taurant business since he was 15. He worked in hotels in New York and Boston before coming to Hous ton in January. He speaks five languages, which is very helpful in his type of work. In addition to Gofman’s presen tation, the program will include an exhibition of books on foods, wines, and entertainment from the Cushing Memorial Library. Mrs. John Seely Caldwell of Caldwell’s Jewelry Store will display table settings for Thanksgiving and Christmas. All members have been invited to bring guests to this program, said a club spokesman. Tea will precede the program. California, where she joined him as a student in the spring of 1961. In June, 1962, Abd El-Magnid re ceived his masters degree. Mr. and Mrs. Abd El-Magnid moved to College Station during the summer of 1962 and he started work on his doctors degree. This fall Mrs. Abd El-Magnid was ac cepted into the Department of Poultry Scince as a graduate stu dent. When they receive their degrees, they plan to return to Egypt. Dr. J. H. Quisenberry, head of the department, indicated that he was very pleased with his first co-ed. Foreign Students 9 Reception Planned A reception for all foreign stu dents attending A&M University will be held Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Birch Room of the Memorial Student Center. Invitations have been issued to approximately 500 persons, in cluding foreign students, exchange visitors and guests. The yearly reception is cospon sored by the American Association of University Women, the Campus Study Club, the Pan - American Club and the Agricultural Exten sion Club. The guests will be greeted by President and Mrs. Earl Rudder and by the Chancellor and Mrs. M. T.
