New aluminum letters have sup plemented the old letters in the recent change of the name on the monuments at East Gate from “A&M College of Texas” to “Texas A&M University.” Costs were defrayed by making use of the old letters in the new name. The matter of changing the let ters on the smokestack has been discussed, but no definite plans have been made as yet. Nothing will be done to the old landmark until demolition of its sister stack is completed and a low, modern smoke stack and will probably have The letters are sunken in the smoketsack and will probably have to be filled in with concrete and then reworked. “THE COLLEGE seal enlaid in the floor inside the entrance of both the System Administration and Richard Coke Building will not be changed. There is too much his torical and sentimental value in volved to permit a change,” Tom D. Cherry, director of business affairs. After studying several designs submitted by artists, the executive committee chose a new seal and a letterhead which is now in use on all university stationery. A new inscription will be print ed on the water tower sometime this winter. This will very likely be done during the Christmas holi days when there will be less de mand for the water. The tower will be drained and then receive fresh coats of paint inside and out. Cherry noted that the overall cost of making these changes has not amounted to much. “We are changing things, for the most part, as we would have nor mally done in the course of mak ing the usual repairs,” said Cherry. “We have had no loss in mer chandise due to the name change,” said Carl Birdwell, Exchange Store manager. “Everything concern ing the change has been very smooth.” Due to the name change coming late in the year, shoulder patches and collar brass for the Corps were not changed for this school year. The change to “AMU” will probably be made by next fall. “ALL NEW merchandise we are now receiving has the new seal and university title, however, there is a possibility that former stu dents will still prefer articles with A&M College of Texas inscribed upon them. “If this is so, we will meet the demand.” Sentimentalists now ordering their class rings can still have “college” inscribed on them, al though “university” is now avail able for those that prefer the newer In addition to the usual prob lems associated with a name change of a large institution, some people still seem to be confused as whe ther or not to pust periods after the “A” and “M” in the new name. To clarify the matter, there should be no periods for “A&M” stands for nothing. | NEW SIGN PART OF ‘NEW LOOK’ Co-education spearheads revolution.
