Most of the day’s 17 speakers in St. Peter’s Basilica dwelt on word meaning and symbols from both Old and New Testaments as they suggested changes in the schema topic ‘‘de ecclesia” - concerning the church. They delved in areas that touch upon exegetics - a theological specialty in which Biblical schol ars investigate and interpret scriptural meanings. “De ecclesia” re-examines what Christ intended in founding a ; church, what its structure really ■ is and who belongs to it. A draft of the schema was approved in principle by the council Tuesday. The 2,300 council fathers heard views on the fwst of the schema’s four chapters, “The mystery of the church.” Bushmen of the Kalahari-waste land in southern Africa. use an arrow poison so potent that one drop can kill a man if it enters the bloodstream. THE BATTALION Thursday, October 3, 1963 College Station, Texas Page 3 Peach, Plum Farmers Give Special Heed To Irrigation Peach and plum farmers, with memories of the severe summer drouth still fresh in their minds, paid special attention to an irriga tion discussion here Wednesday. As members of the 11th annual Texas Peach and Plum Growers Conference, they heard how irriga tion can solve water worries but is not a solution to all problems. Wayne Keese, irrigation special ist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, described three systems applicable to fruit or chards — sprinkler, furrow and flooding. OF THE THREE, the sprinkler usually is best if the orchard is already established. It is adaptable to rolling land. If the farmer is starting from scratch and the land is relatively flat, then he might consider the furrow or flooding systems. Wells, he said, are most dependl- able but are sometimes expensive to drill, maintain and operate. Re servoirs are good if they are al ready available. Building a re servoir just to irrigate an orchard is likely to be too costly. Streams are often like reservoirs, Keese pointed out. They are low just when needed the most. What about cost? The special ist said this factor is hard to pin down because conditions vary so much from farm to farm. General ly, total cost to develop a sprink ler system will run from $75 to $125 per acre. ON A UNIT volume basis, which Keese said is a more accurate com parison method, total cost of a sprinkler system will range from $1.75 to $2.25 per acre inch of water applied.
