House, secretary for the Southwestern Cotton Insects Investigations here, has been granted a certificate of merit and a cash award for “outstanding sec retarial work” by the Agricultural Research Service Incentive Awards Committee of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Mrs. House, the former Miss Ada Duncan, is a longtime em ployee on the A&M campus. The nomination for the award pointed out that Mrs. House pos sesses exceptional skill and ability exceeding the requirements of the regular duties and responsibilities of her position. It also noted that “her courteous, friendly, yet dig nified manner” has contributed to the maintenance of cordial rela tionships between the Cotton In sects Research Laboratory and other agencies. Speech By Transportation Institute Official Published M 0 1 Jomplete 1 ’acting—7 A speech made by John P. Doyle of the Texas Transportation Insti tute at A&M has been published in the current issue of the National Defense Transportation Journal. His talk was presented at the National Defense Transportation Day observance in San Antonio. In his address, the retired major general warned “unnecessary trans portation costs increase the cost of living and weaken our com petitive position in world markets- including our own.” He added that transportation is consuming an “unnecessarily large share of our national wealth, and, in the process, creating a threat to our security both by helping undermine our economic structure and by weakening our common car riers which from the first line of defense transportation.” “National security,” he con tinued, “is not limited to a shoot- 7,457 Visitors Recorded A total of 7,457 visitors were on the A&M campus during the months of June and July, 1963, P. Evans, coordinator of architectural research at A&M, has resigned to become head of research for the American Insti tute of Architects in Washington, D. C. Evans will terminate 11 years of teaching and research at A&M Thursday. He joined the faculty in 1952 and became coordinator of re search in 1958. No replacement has been named. He received both bachelor’-e and master’s degrees in architecture from A&M. In his new position, Evans will work directly with the AIA Com mittee on Research for Architec ture to determine and implement research programs and to develop AL! and disseminate research infomij tion.
