No other football race, even in Texas, ever was that big. In 1920, when the League first started a championship campaign, there were 198 schools. Because it was in November that Roy Bedichek, director of the Interscholastic League, decided to match the teams with the best records in a playoff for the first Texas school boy title. Cleburne and Houston Heights finally emerged as the finalists and played a scoreless tie in the mud at Austin. NOW 44' YEARS later 935 schools will play for four state championships and a multitude of regional titles in the biggest foot ball campaign of them all. Last year 918 teams competed for an all-time record. To the amazement of most everybody, the League classification list for 1963 shows there will be 17 more teams than ever before. Every classification has in creased except eight and six-man football where the same number—• 57 and 71 respectively—will go to the post in September. Defending state championships are San Antonio Brackenridge in Class AAAA, Dumas in Class AAA, Jacksboro in Class AA and Rotan in Class A. The Interscholastic League over the years will be reviewed in a book that emerges from the TexiaB Press at Waco the first week in August. It’s title is “Autumn’s mightiest Legions” and it tells the story of Texas schoolboy football from the playing field to the court room. YES, TEXAS schoolboy football has thrice been in the courts. The last time, the League established its right to enforce its rules unless they conflicted with the laws of the land. This is among facts revealed in a book that tells about the only state championship ever decided by the Class B schools and of a state championship that the League it self has tried to forget for 50 years. In 1926 Anson and Marlin met for the Class B championship at Abilene. Anson won 3-0 but Mar lin’s little men made such a great showing against terrific odds that Dew'ey Mayhew, the Marlin coach, was hired by Abilene. The game wasn’t supposed to be played but the League hadn’t writ ten its rules right to prevent it. It rewrote them the next year to forbid Class B from ever going beyond the regional level. MOVING?
