Page S College Station, Texas Thursday, May 30, 1963 THE BATTALION Yankees May Have Infield Liken To Old Chicago Cubs By JOE REICHLER NEW YORK WP) — Maybe Ralph Houk is right. Maybe the New York Yankees have a “five- million-dollar infield” as Manager Houk proclaims. Five million or 50 million, the Yankee foursome of Clete Boyei’, Tony Kubek, Bobby Richardson and Joe Pepitone can never hope to match in glory and fame the fabled infield of the Chicago Cubs of nearly half a century ago. FEW, IF any today can identify the third baseman, Harry Stein- feldt, of that Cub infield but hard ily anyone hasn’t heard of the famed double play combination of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance. And therein lies a great hoa v a gigantic piece of propaganda that transformed an ordinary dou ble play combination into a leg endary one. THE TRUTH is the double play was not perpetrated by this trio by It less famous only seems any more than contemporaries, that way. In the five years from 190C through 1910, the trio acounted for no more than 54 double plays : n 770 games. By way of comparison, Pitts burgh’s double play combination of second baseman Bill Mazeroski and shortstop Dick Groat collabo rated in 126 double plays last year.
