Complete Moving Stij Packing—Transportaliia Storage FRESHMAN SWIMMING CHAMPS Effigy Of Ex-Baylor Coach Is Another First For Texas By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer Texas always is coming' up with a first. It could be because the place is so big most anything that’s going to happen just can’t miss Texas. The first Negro heavyweight boxing champion was from Texas— Jack Johnson. The first big money golf tourna ment was in Texas—the Texas Open in 1922. The first organized state school- of them—came in Texa s. AND SO ON. Which leads up to another first—a track coach was hung in effigy. Moreover, Texas must be the first place ever to have a contro versy over whether the local track team won or not. Track never has been a revenue producer. No one bets on it. Therefore, if there ever is a “fix” it will be one of the miracles of the ages. But Baylor University put up a fight trying to keep its track coach from going to the University of Texas. Jack Patterson had won three Southwest Conference champion ships in four years. But that wasn’t the only reason Baylor wanted to keep him. He was such a fine gentleman and such a nice fellow that Baylor figured it real ly had it made—a good guy and winning championships at the same time. It wanted to retain the combination. DOWN AT Austin there was a different sort of feeling although apparently only in the minds of a few. Somebody strung up an ef figy on the University of Texas campus. Patterson took it in stride. He said it didn’t look like him because it wasn’t tall enough. The Baylor track team made a vow to win the conference champ ionship not only to show how it idolized its coach but to keep him if possible. But Patterson already had committed himself to Texas and his ethics told him he had to carry through. That only made him more popular. But the whole thing indicated that track, a step-son of the athle tic department in the past, was becoming a full-fledged member of the family. It had reached the point where it could compete with any sport—it had an effigy and it caused a tug-of-war between two schools. PATTERSON BLASTS the the ory that a fellow must be tough and ruthless if he is to win. The tall man from Baylor, who gets more out of his boys because of his fatherly attitude than other coaches with driving tactics, has been successful because he’s a nice guy as well as a good coach. His boys fight for him and his op ponents admire him. Patterson should build a great record in track at the University of Texas, where material abounds. He had to develop stars from boys whose willingness exceeded their ability. At Texas he should have plenty of fellows who already have enough ability and won’t need to be built up for a couple of years before they can start racking up the winning points. It’s a pretty good bet that no body at Texas will want to hang an effigy when they get to know the CONVENIENCE ^ Southwestern States Telephone Roundup Special This is your last opportunity to buy College jewelry and novelties that have AMC or the College Seal on them. Four Aggie sophomore football players and one freshman football player had their athletic scholai’- ships temporarily suspended for disciplinary reasons Wednesday by Athletic Director and Head Foot ball Coach Hank Foldberg. Included in the suspension were lettefmen Ken McLean of Stinnet, i fullback, Jim Drennen of Hooks, Ronnie Moore of Brownwood and Yancy Bounds of Carthage, guards. The freshman letterman was Burle Hintze of Dallas, a tackle. Foldberg said he would talk with the boys Thursday afternoon to determine whether to make the suspensions permanent. “I have so far only heard one side of the story and will not take final action until I hear both sides,” Foldberg said. He did not give reasons for the suspension but intimated that they may not be severe. Beard Transfer & Sl«| Agent For UNITED VAN LIXj TA 2-2835 707 S.
