Tishler, Chairman Convocations Committee Roaches-Termites-Fleas-Silver Fish Spiders-Ants P & L PEST CONTROL Jerry Payne TA 2-0594 BRYAN—ROUTE 2, BOX 174 OUR WORK GUARANTEED BY JIM BUTLER Battalion Sports Editor The grand finale for Southwest Conference thinclads opens Friday in Fayetteville, Ark., with the Ag gies favored to edge Baylor for their first track title since 1953. A&M will be counting on its weightmen and distance men to over-balance Baylor’s potential in the sprints, ^exas and Rice are rated as outside chances but both lack the over-all strength of the Cadets and Bruins. Bob Cheyne, sports publicist for the host school, attempted a pre meet prediction and ended up with 76 points for A&M, 57 for Baylor, 54 for Rice and 33 for the Long horns. What the figures can’t represent are the off-track activities going- on at the Baptist school and Forty Acres. Bear coach Jack Patterson has announced his intention of ac cepting the track coaching job at Texas and his squad has sworn to go “all-out” to win for the highly respected mentor. Meanwhile, back in the camp of the Steers, the TU cindermen have pledged to do their best to show that the school was wrong in let ting their coach Froggie Loworn go. Whether these vows will pro vide extra energy or backfire into a demoralizer remains to be seen by the outcome of the meet. The Aggies will have one of the three “super-stars” in the meet and the best bet for a double win ner in Danny Roberts. The junior from Cleveland will shoot at con ference records in the shot put and discus, one of which he al ready owns'. Roberts set the current standard last year with a toss of 57-1%. John Fry of Baylor holds the dis cus mark set in 1961 with a throw of 172-5. Roberts’ best effort in the discus this season is 180-9%. The other super-stars are Frecl Hansen and Ed Red of Rice. Han sen, who has cleared 16-1 earlier this year, will be shooting at his last year’s record jump of 15-5. Red can have an off day and still break the javelin mark of 226-1%. Red’s top effort has been 260-7%, second best in the country. The Aggies have another possi ble record breaker in two-miler E. L. Ener. The Cadet track captain has run the distance in 9:17.1 while the SWC mark is 9:18.7. A&M is expected to score in ev ery event with the exception of the hurdles—high and intermediate. Coach Charlie Thomas had no en tries for those two contests. Baylor will pick up many of its points in the 100-yard and 200- yard dashes with Bill Kemp and Glynn Fields. The Bears also have the fastest times in the 440-yard and mile relays. Below are the 16 events on the schedule with the top A&M con tenders listed first. Trouble Ahead Fof UT Track When Baylor Coach Moves In FORT WORTH GT) — Trouble lies ahead for the University of Texas when Baylor’s Jack Patter son replaces T. J. Froggy Loworn as track coach, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram said Wednesday. Dick Moore wrote: “The expected change-over has stirred up mixed emotions in Aus tin. “The Texas crew is resentful, some to such a degree that they threaten to desert to other schools if Loworn is replaced. Admission to the game is 50 cents. Coaching the Corps men are Bil ly Atkinson and his assistant Dick ie StringfelloAV. The civilians are tutored by John Reynolds and Lynn Merritt. Coach Shelby Metcalf is helping both teams. The bowl game is sponsored by the Student Senate in support of the 12th Man Fund Scholarships. Eleven Aggies have received sch olarships from the fund. One of the Aggies will graduate this May. Texas Athletic Director Darrell Royal was not available for com ment. The Star-Telegram said the var sity and freshman distance per sonnel appear to be the most dis turbed over the coaching change. It quoted distance runner Loy Gun ter as saying: “Froggy has built a great cross country program since coming here. Baylor has never had a strong cross-country setup. Coach Patterson doesn’t seem to be in terested in one. “Does that mean ours will go to pot ? “It’s bad to see your coach cut down every week by the paper, here in Austin. The kids don’t like it. Every boy is behind Froggy 100 per cent. He knows it. “They’ll do their best at Fayet teville at the conference track meet to prove the others are wrong in letting him go.” DIMAG GOES NORTH FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
