Fly weigh t Figh ters Ferocious Fleas BY JIM BECKER Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK — Some peo ple run four-minute miles. Others pole vault 16 feet. Bob Friend sets records for balks. I hold the record for watching w o r 1 d flyweight championship fights. The record was not sought. No one seeks out flyweight fights. It came from a certain amount of bad luck and a lot of bouncing around Asia, where flyweig'hts still are in vogue. THE HOBBY is not particularly rewarding. The flyweight limit is 112 pounds and the fights are usu ally about as lethal as a pillow fight among Vassar co-eds. Most of the decisions go to the man with the most ferocious ex pression. Seldom is a blow struck in malice. Flyweights have been extinct in the United States for years. Cur rently they ply their trade in places like Tokyo, Manila and Bangkok. At that time, a gentle English soul named Terry Allen, who wouldn’t hurt another flyweight for the world, had grown tired of starving with the title and had come to Hawaii to give it to Dado Marino. Allen and Marine fought two of the worst fights in history. Allen was a member of the peck-and- run school. Marino was mildly combative and if an opponent ven tured within range he would swing at him. Allen didn’t come near him. HAWAII was not yet a state, but it had already adopted the at titude toward flyweights that pre vailed in the rest of the nation. Marino soon found that out. He set out to give it away to the next fellow who came along. This turned out to be Yoshio Shirai of Japan. Shirai’s chief claim to fame was that he stood 5-feet-6, which made him the Wilt Chamberlain of his group. Shirai whipped Dado, and the pair proceeded to Japan for a re match. SHIRAI defended mostly against fellows who were guaranteed to display no base emotions. Then Shirai fought a fellow from Argentina named Pascual Perez who broke all the flyweight union rules. He fought like he was mad, or something-, so he got the title for a while. Unfortunately, he elected to de fend it mainly in Asia, where I was. Once he fought Leo Espinosa in Manila, and those who stayed awal^e for the full 15 rounds swore that not a blow was landed by ei ther party. Perez finally passed the fly weight torch back to the Asians, who at last reports are still at it. Ener’s time broke the record of 9:19.9 set by Jerry Thompson of Texas in 1948. The fourth meet record to fall was in the javelin throw where Rice’s Ed Red threw the spear 246 feet 1 inch to break his own rec ord set last year. TEXAS TALLIED 65 points while Rice had 56% and A&M 47% in this last action before the South west Conference Meet in Fayette ville, Ark., next weekend. In other track action Thursday, Baylor easily won a quadrangular meet with Southern Methodist, Texas Christian and Texas Tech. The Bruins won 10 of the events, SMU four, TCU and Texas Tech one each. Baylor scored 94% points, SMU 40, Tech 20and TCU 17. The conference meet gets under way May 10 with Baylor and A&M established as co-favorites. The Bears’ strength in the sprints will be tested against the Aggies’ weightmen. Intramurals The championship tennis match to decide the new Corps champion is scheduled for Friday.
