He is A&M’s star shot-putter who holds the Southwest Confer ence record for that event, Coach Charles Thomas’ most consistent winner and the Aggies’ biggest eater. Because of Danny’s desire to help, he is now one of the nation’s outstanding weight men. Because of his friendliness, he is one of A&M’s most popular stu dents. Because of his appetite, he is on his grocer’s “who’s who.” Danny could not deny the request of Joe Richardson, then the track coach of Cleveland High School, when Richardson braved a blus tery wind on a spring afternoon five years ago to visit the baseball field to ask Danny to help in track. ROBERTS was catching ’em up at first base, trying to make the baseball team as a 190-pound sophomore. “Coach Richardson asked me to come over to the track after base ball practice and see what I could do with the shot. He needed help for the district meet. I didn’t think I could help, but I could not turn him down,” Roberts said. Danny visited the ring that aft ernoon, found that putting the shot really wasn’t so hard and following three weeks of hard work and three meets won the District 24-AA shot at 47-3. HE WENT on to place second in the regional meet at 48-10% but hurt his shoulder and did not compete in the state meet. “Because of Coach Richardson’ (now coaching at Liberty High School) I’m in track today,” Rob erts recalls. Track did not cause Danny to steer away from successful high school careers in football, basket ball and baseball. He won four letters each in basketball and football and three each in track and baseball. His honors included all-state in track and all-district in basketball (for ward), football (tackle) and base ball (first base). DANNY LONG ago set a goal to improve his put three feet each year and is about on schedule. His heaves with the 12-pound shot in high school were 48-10 V2 his soph omore year, 56-6 as a junior and 60-6 as a senior when he finished second in the state meet. Roberts began using the 16- pound sphere when he matriculated at A&M and threw 54-4'as a fresh man and 57-1% last year at Waco when he set a new standard in the Southwest Conference Track and Field Meet. His best this year as a junior came at the Texas Re lays—a winning toss of 59-3%. HE ABIDES by a 12 - month weight-lifting program, adding to this a daily workout during the season that includes from two to 2% hours of jogging around the track, tossing the shot 20 to 25 times from in front of the ring and 25 times from insides the ring and topping off the drill by heav ing the discus 20 to 25 times. Danny favors the shot, but has had success in the discus, too. He placed second in the 1962 SWC Meet with 162-0% and has a best distance of 180-9% this season. Roberts believes that form and proper attitude are more than 90 per cent of what is needed to be a shot star. “You can be as strong as an ox and still not get distance. Your winning throws come when every thing is just right—everything else out of your mind and you have a good windup and follow through. MENTAL ATTITUDE means so much. If you want to win bad » enough, you can. I want to be the first in Texas to make 60 feet. I believe I pan—possibly near the end of this season,” Roberts says. Danny’s tremendous appetite is tied to his athletics — he works hard, generates lots of energy and needs lots of food. That’s putting is mildly, really, for Roberts always eats two KC steaks (the large kind) before each meet (he ate three before his re cord-shattering performance at the Texas Relays when his 59-3% set an A&M school mark).
