The Cou gars carl do all right as independ ents but could do real well if they got into a major conference. Hardin-Simmons talked about joining the new conference but never was very positive about it. Just why the Abilene school choos es to go it alone when it’s already in poor shape is difficult to figure. It seems that all of the Abilene colleges should be in the confer ence. That would create enough rivalry locally to insure a success ful financial outcome. McMURRY, Texas Lutheran and Tarleton State definitely would ap pear good timber for the new league. Austin College operates on a no-scholarship basis and could hardly be expected to enter. West Texas State and Texas Western want in the Western States Con ference along with the Arizona schools, which is quite understand able. They probably will get in shortly. Corpus Christi would have to emphasize football considerable more to make it a good prospect. THE BATTALION Thursday, April 4, 1963 College Station, Texas Page 5 TAKE OVER SWC LEAD Frogs Edge Ags In Squeaker, 4-2 ROBERT MCADAMS ... drove in A&M’s only two runs Wednesday. Coach Tom Chandler’s basebal- lers opened their crucial two-game series with Texas Christian Wed nesday afternoon and fell to the Horned Frogs 4-2. The TCU win on their own field put them one-half game ahead of the Aggies for the Southwest Con ference lead. TCU is 4-1 and A&M is 3-1. Pat Peebles, a right-hander fast- baller, pitched a strong five-hitter for the Frogs and retired 12 Cadets in order during one stretch. Johnny Crain was the starter and loser for the Maroon, allowing four runs and 12 hits in his 6 1/3 innings. Lefty Richard Beller came on to retire the last five Frog hitters. TCU started the scoring in the first inning bunching a base on balls and four singles for two tallies. Don Reynolds drove in the first score with a looping drive to centerfield and Fred Jones drove in the second run with a sharp single to left. ■ TSfcjak MV#.*; YOUR SAFETY is our business at Firestone 00 ■ ■ • Don’t Miss This Week’s !; Here’s what we do: ★ Adjust Brakes — All 4 wheels. The Aggies have defeated both the Longhorn fencers and wrestlers in earlier matches this season. But Coach Russell K. Wieder is cau tious about Saturday’s events. Wieder, an assistant professor of health and physical education, coaches both the Wrestling and Fencing Clubs teams. “They’ll be loaded for us this time,” Wieder said of the univer sity’s teams. The fencers begin their bouts at 2 p.m. and the wrestlers pair off at 3:30 p.m. in Gregory Gym nasium. The Aggie fencers defeated the U of T team 11 to five in an earli er 16-bout match. Twice the Ag gies defeated Rice University fenc ers by a 14-2 score in other action this season. The A&M wrestlers downed the U of T 24-8, in an earlier match Palmer Favorite To Win 4th Masters Golf king Arnold Palmer is a 4-1 favorite to win his fourth Mas ters Tournament, beginning Thurs day. But the other two-thirds of the “Big Three” — Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus — are not far behind at 6-1. However, eveiy top professional and amateur g’olfer in the country will be seeking to upset the odds. Observers feel the best bets out side the favored trio will be young swingers Tony Lema, Johnny Pott and Don January. and also have beaten the Houston All-Stars, outstanding wrestlers from YMCA’s and Boys Clubs. Le- Tourneau Institute, which has a varsity wrestling team, defeated the Aggies 24-8 in December as the Aggies’ first loss in several years. Later, LeToumeau edged the Aggies 15-13. The Aggie fencers are Wyatt K. Anderson, Alvaro Restrepo, Eu- doro Galindo, Ricardo Cerna, Thomas B. Wilson, Joe F. Becera, and Clifford A. Jacobs. Coach Wieder’s wrestlers are: Gary Riner, Michael Norman, Jer ry Simpton, Alexander Brostek, Gary Aglietti, Mark Finkelstein, Jefferson Begay, and Harley Han- The Aggies tied the count in the third with Robert McAdams’ dou ble driving across Jerry Ballard and Bill Hancock who had singled. The Horned Frogs threatened in the third leaving the bases loaded and again in the sixth with run ners on second and third with one man out. Crain then struck out Bill McAdams and got Bob Bigley on a liner to right to end the in ning. That was only a breather though as TCU struck for two runs in the seventh and held on for the win. Jay Walrath started the inning with his third hit of the game. Following a fine play on a ground er that retired Walrath at second base, Ronnie McLain tripled to deep centerfield scoring Don Rey nolds who had reached first on the fielder’s choice. Jones followed McLain’s blast with a single to left accounting for the Frogs’ last run. The loss dropped A&M’s season slate to 8-4 while TCU is now 13-2. The two teams play again Thursday with Ed Singley pitching for the Cadets. TCU will pitch Lance Brown who is undefeated in five decisions this season and has an earned run average of 1.23. Singley is 2-1 with an ERA of 1.42. To pin down the fleeting beauty, follow the rules, but cool. Stay in the shade of an h.i.s Suit that feels like button ing on a breeze.
