Halfback George Schutze and fullback Sherman Debusk from Austin were two of Schmidt’s catches. Schutze led the city in punting with 55 kicks for a 36.3 average. Weighing 170 pounds, he carried the ball 34 times and gained 216 yards. Debusk, a 190-pounder, paced the city’s rushers with 199 carries for 776 yards and a 3.9 average for the district champion Austin High Maroons. The other halfback is Katy’s Jerry Gipson, 6-2, 170 pounds. Gipson ran the ball 111 times for 715 yards as well as snagging 13 passes for an additional 261 yards. He scored 11 touchdowns though missing two games with an injury. Head Coach Hank Foldberg esti mated the size of the 1963 fresh man squad to be 40 gridders. Al though only 30 have been an nounced, more have been signed and more announcements are ex pected to be forthcoming. Rollie White Weimar of District 24-A and Hudson of Lufkin 21-A will open Region 3 basketball tournament play in G. Rollie White Coliseum Saturday at 8:45 a.m. The tourney will certify regional champions in Classes A A and A to the state tournament in Austin next week. Pairings announced by tourna ment director Barlow Irvin were: Class A— 8:45 a.m.: Weimar 24-A vs. Hudson of Lufkin 21-A. 10:15 a.m.: West Sabine 20-A vs. Quitman 18-A.
