Rollie White Coliseum as A&M and Texas students alike filed silently out of the gym where the Cadets went down to a 70-59 defeat at the hands of the Longhorns. The traditional Texas haunt may have been well-deserved, but the Longhorns felt it wiser to contain their glee until away from cam pus. Nothing- can be taken away from Longhorns, though, as the play of their three guards — Jimmy Gil bert, Jimmy Puryear and John Heller — can be inadequately de scribed as phenomenal. Gilbert’s 23 points and Puryear’s 19 were career hig’hs for each play er and Heller chipped in 13 to complete the rout before a capacity crowd. TEXAS’ BIG sophomore John Paul Fultz added 12, mainly on hook shots, to finish out the Long’- horn scoring with the exception of Mike Humphrey’s three points. Top man for the Agg’ies and for the game was Bennie Lenox, who hit well on all shots for 26 points. Lee Walker scored 15, with 11 coming’ on charity tosses. Walker led both teams in re bounds with 11 while Joe Fisher grabbed off eight for the Steers. The next game for the Aggies will be against TCU in Ft. Worth Saturday night. Other scoring was fairly evenly distributed for A&M, with Billy Atkinson hitting 12, Dicky String- fellow connecting for 11 and John Beasley and John Reynolds hit ting nine and eight, respectively. Ball-hawking Paul Olivier match ed Roberts for the Texas Frosh and teammate Platt Davis hit 16 points to be second high man for the game. AFTER A BRIEF exchange of the advantage mid-way in the first half, and a tied score with about three minutes remaining, the Fish led all the way. With just under seven minutes left in the contest, Davis connect ed on a pair of driving layups to start a Texas surge that came close to catching the Ags. Roberts and Reynolds kept the Fish in gear with a jump shot each and then A&M was able to stall out the rest of the game. The Fish will travel to Fort Worth with the varsity Saturday for a try at the TCU Wogs. Tues day night’s victory left the fresh men with a 5-1 record.
