Detailed work concerning the varying payroll deductions for em ployees adds up to a large amount of work. This is especially true of the September payroll said Walter F. Berndt, fiscal depart ment auditor, and Billy J. Barker, payroll supervisor. Hours of nights and weekend work during September was con cluded at 3 a.m.. Sept. 24. At 5:30 the same morning George Litton of the fiscal department took nec essary records to Austin. Democrats Say Schools Need Help The Texas Democratic Execu tive Committee chairman em phasized party aims in higher education during a visit here Wednesday afternoon. “Lifting the level of excel lence in education in all areas is the first goal in the educa tion section of the Democratic platform adopted by Democrats,” Ed Locke of Dallas said. “In dustry follows brainpower and brainpower follows industry.” Texas Democrats are pledged to help attract more professors of pre-eminence and national reputation to the state, Locke pointed out. Friday, October 12, 1962 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Page 3 100 College Heads Will Meet Here Over 100 college officials, rep resenting 105 Texas senior and junior colleges, will be on campus Monday and Tuesday for the 19th Annual Junior College Conference at the Memorial Student Center. The conference, with Dr. C. H. Ransdell, assistant dean of engi neering as chairman, will be di vided into two sections. The theme for Monday’s program is “Expanding Roles for the Junior College,” while Tuesday’s theme will be “Agency Study of New Roles for Junior Colleges.” Established to coordinate the two-year and four-year colleges, the conference will be attended by the various schools’ presidents, deans and staff. Monday’s program will open at 9 a.m. in the M S C Assembly Room. Dr. William Graff, dean of instruction, will welcome the col lege officials, while Dr. A. S.
