B. Hervey, executive secretary of the association. ‘ Only $150,000-of the total con tributions can be classified as un restricted funds to be applied to the program goal of $268,500, Hervey said. He explained that $50,000 of the contributions have been designated by donors for purposes other than those set up by the Development Fund Pro gram. With almost all the alumni drives complete, more than 14,500 contributions have been made to the fund. Hervey said that addi tional funds will be received from ten corporate luncheons which will be held throughout the state this fall, to which representatives of area businesses and corporations will be invited. This is only the second year that the corporate program has been employed and it is expected to produce about $100,000 this year, Hervey said. The corporate pro gram last year contributed ap proximately 15 per cent of the total contributions. The development fund provides aid for various projects and pro grams designed to promote the welfare of the college. Hervey said that funds previ ously earmarked for this year pro vide $146,000 for “academic excel lence,” $25,000 for the Century Study, $10,000 for Opportunity Award scholarships, $8,000 for eight Faculty Achievement Awards, $4,500 for the college president’s and deans’ emergency funds and $10,000 for the 1962 Directory of Former Students. By RONNIE FANN Battalion News Editor In the early summer of next year, 50 A&M students will leave for ports in Europe in the first of several cruises they will take as cadets of the new Texas Maritime Academy. This first cruise will climax a year of freshman studies and maritime training on campus, and will precede their transfer to the academy’s own campus at Ft. Crockett in Galveston. Capt. Bennett M. Dodson, for mer chief of staff of the Com mander Service Force with the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Har bor, will be the superintendent of the new academy. These will not be the first sea going Aggies, but will be the first destined to become merchant ma rine officers. (The Department of Oceanography and Meteorology has been an ocean-going'outfit for a dozen years now.) Operates As Separate Unit The new academy will operate on the campus as a separate unit of the corps under the direction of CAPT. B. M. DODSON. Dodson, and will be housed with the new Marine unit, 1-3. “We have a limited enrollment of 50, but we still have some va cancies to date,” Dodson said. “En tering freshmen and returning sophomores who would like to change their major to maritime training are requested to see me in the YMCA building if they are interested,” he said. “This is not an ROTC program, but a Naval Science Department.” Graduates of the Academy will be eligible for Naval reserve com missions, and will be qualified of ficers of the U. S. Merchant Ma rine, prepared to serve as deck and engineering officers aboard merchant vessels. Courses of Study Two courses of study are open to the degree of Bachelor of Science in IV^arine Engineering and to the Coast Guard-issued license as Third Assistant Engineer, Steam and Motor Vessels, Ocean, Unlimited. Marine engineering, which is closely related to mechanical en gineering, emphasizes the design, operation and maintenance of maritime power plants and associ ated equipment. The other course available is Marine Transportation. It leads to a degree of Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and to the Coast Guard issued license as Third Mate, Steam and Motor Ves sels, Ocean, Unlimited. This program is designed to fa miliarize cadets with ship opera tion and management and also emphasizes the economic and busi ness aspects of the maritime in dustry. Sea Training Required Each sea-training period is a required, staff-supervised, educa tional term intended to insure nec essary operational training periods and experience for all cadets. The operational training period includes visits to five or six for eign ports. Different ports are se lected each year to provide cadets 111®! Maritime cadets will make Academy stands waiting for the Aggies who two summer cruises to foreign ports, will sail her after completing one year of with a wide range of experience. Ample liberty time is provided in each port, affording- cadets the opportunity to visit places of cul tural and historic, as well as mari time, importance. The Federal Maritime Adminis tration has provided the academy with a training ship, but since the academy is new, c&dets will train for the first two years with the senior cadets of another academy. Cruises Start In June The first training cruise will begin in June of next year. Texas Maritime Academy cadets will de part in company for the Port of New York, where they will report to the commanding officer of the “Empire State IV,” the training ship of the New York State Uni versity Maritime College. Aggies will sail with the 450 New York cadets for ports in Europe. “The Texas Maritime Academy is the only academy in the South, and will be a boon to the shipping industry of this area,” Dodson said. “There is a great demand for qualified men to serve in the merchant marine because of the increasing retirement rate of those who came in during World War II and the Korean Conflict.” Dodson commented that career opportunities at sea for a well- educated and experienced young man are unlimited. A Third Officer may earn more than $7,000 a year, and a Chief Engineer or Master may earn $15,- 000 to $20,000 a year with plenty of opportunities for overtime pay, he said. jF J We Reserve The Right To Limit AH Sales - GROCERIES - Green Giant—303 Cans Sweet Peas 5 For $1.00 Green Giant—Niblets Golden Corn 2 For 35c Green Giant—300 Size Cans Green Asparagus.... 2 For 89c Snowdrift SHORTENING 3-Lb.
