(AP Wirephoto) Joe Garagiola Helps Prove Baseball Best From Booth By FRANK ECK AP Newsfeatures Sports Editor Best way to cover a baseball game is from a radio booth with ex-catcher Joe Garagiola and Harry Caray, the St. Louis Cardi nal broadcasters. Garagiola is the poor man’s Yogi Berra, he says. They were neighbors in St. Louis but Joe was smarter. He left the catching pro fession sooner, became an after and before dinner speaker and telecasts regularly. Last year, Yogi quit the tools of ignorance for left field. Here’s how Garagiola and Caray report a game between the Cards and Dodgers: Harry C.: “Thad Tillotson is on the mound for Los Angeles. With a name like that he could be the new Rifleman.” Joe G.: “I can see it now—‘The Saga of Sherman (Roadblock) Jones’ as played by Thad Tillotson. It’s a good thing his catcher isn’t Cub Moe Thacker. That would be a real thong thwister. (Thad is now with Spokane.) “Here’s writer.” Y ogi Berra’s ghost This writer: “It wasn’t Yogi who called Cincinnati’s ballpark a dump during the last World Series. Garagiola gave him that idea. Joe asked if left field reminded him of any other park, and Yogi said ‘Yeh, the dumps where we played as kids in St. Louis.’ “Yogi was only making a com parison about Cincinnati’s left field rise, a place he had seen only once in an exhibition game years ago. In the St. Louis dumps if you went back too far for a fly ball in left field you’d wind up in the fresh garbage.” BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES Ise day 8* per word 14 per word each additional day Minimum rharc’e—404 lIMorri charce- DEADMNE 4 p.m. day before publicatio Classified Display 80d per colnmn inch each insertion PHONE VI 6-641S FOR RENT Available September 1st, large cool bed- ber J room, nicely furnished, private entrance, private bath, apply 500 Main Street, North Gate, College Station. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer The death of Benny (Kid) Paret from injuries suffered in a New York ring* last March has had reverberations wherever there is boxing'. Texas has more boxing than most any section yet never has had a death. But that didn’t pre vent the Paret affair from having a profound effect on this state's boxing setup. Alton Erickson, state commis sioner of boxing and wrestling, says every effort is being made to prevent a repetition of the New York happening although it ap peared to be something that couldn’t be helped. But there are many ways that a fighter can be seriously injured or killed without the rules being- violated. It is with the idea of exploring all the angles and taking steps to plug up the holes that has prompted Erickson’s campaign. He has just instituted the three- knockdown rule in Texas. This means that a fighter is through when he has been knocked down three times because he may have been so bemused by the hammer ing that he can’t properly protect himself thereafter. Ring doctors are being cautioned to be extra careful in their exami nations so that all fighters are in top physical condition before being allowed to enter the ring. Other things, such as making the padding even more substantial than ordinarily expected, are being- invoked. Erickson asks for suggestions on ways of improving the conduct of the game. He feels that the rules are adequate but if they can be impi'oved he’s all for it. Corlis Holt, sports editor of the Port Arthur News, thinks the rules of boxing in Texas are archaic. Confusing would be an other word for it. For instance, one page says the promoters shall not permit any contestant to par ticipate unless he is examined “within two hours prior to enter ing the ring, by a licensed physician.” Another page reads: “Six hours before entering the ring all con testants must be given thorough medical examination.” Adding more confusion, it says on another page that if a fighter fails to show up, a substitute may be named without his being ex amined by mei’ely stating in writ ing that he is physically fit. Why not give the sub a physical exami nation, too? Even a referee, can be substi tuted. The rule books says if a referee fails to show “some person of proper authority present at the match” may name a si 1 Who the person of proper ity shall he is not explaint Holt criticizes the factj qualified substitutions caul for fighters and referee further suggests that t: /elm muter, judge, referee, mane second should have to pa; kind of test that would; they know their business! responsible. He adds tliatt a fellow must pay to (ii positions are all the qua! now required. There’s this rule: “P shall be prohibited in ' arenas, and every possible!; must be made by prom eliminate smoking in j arenas.” This seems to s smoking must not be allcti; there will be no violation::; possible effort is made tod it even though the effortiji SPECIAL PRICES FOR THUR. - FRI. - SAT.— JULY 26 - 27 - 28 ©fiff <8 ®-@ 9 J .m COFFEE Sr“” d MAGIC BAKE BREAD 2 Vt,*- 49c COCA COLAS 12 Bottle Carton 55c ioner ed St cor final s of t ; i 10 .need e Off i con Season With Pork Serve With Cornbread!
