The record of Coach Henry Ran som speaks for itself—three sea sons, three Southwest Conference team championships. Ransom’s pro tour victories number many, but it appears that his coaching triumphs will some day challen e his personal wins. Not sat ; sf : ed with three confer ence victor’os in a row, Ransom declares next • '••son as the one when he might have his best group of college linksmen to date. “I expect to have a better team next spring than the one which took the title this year. We will Ransom turned professional in 1934 at the age of 23 after not having had any formal training in golf at Sam Houston High School. He began playing in the big tourneys, and these are some of his accomplishments: Won the Texas PGA and Texas Open in 1941, St. Paul Open in 1946, Illi nois PGA in 1948 (birdied eight ot the last 11 holes to come from three shots back to win by three strokes), Wilmington-Azalea Open in 1949, World Championship at Chicago in 1950 (won playoff from Chick Harbert at Tam O’Shanter), River City Open in 1955 (birdied 18th hole to tie and then birdied first extra hole to win), Texas hav,- Harry Hoskins (Port Worth). Byrd and Hoskins played fourth and fifth for the Aggies this year and Johnston was ineligible as a junior after first enrolling at North Carolina State to begin the term. Unbeaten in the SWC with a 7-0 record as a sophomore, John ston later changed his mind about changing his alma mater and re turned to Aggieland. These are the returning Cadet golfers who must be beaten if any of this year’s good freshmen are going to break into the lineup. “It can be done,” says Ransom, who lists nine sophomores-to-be that rank highly with him. They include Jeff Andrick of San An tonio, Don Custer of Corpus Chris- ti, Ed Roberson of Freeport, Jay Ferguson of Dallas, Royce Roberts of Austin, Richard Ratliff of Sils- bee, Bernard Hoffart of Conroe, Mike Ford of Andrews and Bobby Nichols of Monson, Mass. Ix)st to the 1963 team through graduation will be John Lively, Jr. of Athens, Jim Fetters of Port Arthur and Dickie Duble of Gal veston. Lively was the 1962 Southwest Conference singles champion, carding a 72-hole total of 284' in medal play at Waco. Lively and Duble tied for the honor in 1960. The Aggies’ team records inside the conference the past three years were 28'/z-13^2 in 1960, 34-8 in 1961 and 28'/2-13!/2 this year. Ransom and golf became sy nonymous when he began to cad dy at the age of seven at the old Houston Country Club. It was here, just a block and a half from Ransom’s home, that the Aggie coach met one of the state’s most colorful professionals, Willie Ma guire, now deceased. Maguire served the club as its pro for more than 39 years. MALOLO® PENNANT STRIPE in all over print or with stripes at focal points. “Orange or blue combinations in sea worthy 100% cotton.
