As head of the Department of
Mathematics and Statistics, Smith
is responsible for technical train
ing and technical competence of
all statisticians in' the company.
The department consults with all
phases of business and has sever
al projects undreway at this time.
During the past few years, the
speaker has delivered many ad
dresses on mathematics and sta
tistical topics throughout the Uni
ted States. At present he is giv
ing a course in experimental sta
tistics to 22 members of manage
ment of the Research Division of
Armco Steel Corporation.
Smith joined Proctor and Gam
ble in 1955 as the company’s first
statistician. His first job was to
determine the extent that statis
tics should play in the organiza
tion and to gradually evolve a
plan for a statistical unit within
the company.
The mathematician proposed that
the statistical organization be split
into two independent parts. The
company accepted the plan, and
Smith was made head of the De
partment of Mathematics and Sta
tistics in the industrial engineering
organization.
During the period 1957-59, the
mathematical function of the com
pany also became his responsibili
ty. In 1959 the industrial engi
neering organization became a cor
porate function, and the Depart
ment of Mathematics and Statistics
had its scope broadened to include
all phases of the campany’s busi
ness.
Smith receied his AB devree
from the University of Delaware
in 1943, and his MA in 1948 and
his doctorate in 1954 from North
Carolina State College. He was on
a special assignment in 1946 to the
University of Basel, Basel, Swit
zerland, and from 1949-50 he stu
died at University College in Lon
don.
His thesis title for the MA de
gree was “An Application of the
Elliptical Distribution Function.”

Baylor State BSU Choir Director To Be
Emcee For Annual BSU Banquet March 24
Dan Pratt, director of the State
Baptist Student Union Choir, from
Baylor, will be master of ceremon
ies for the annual BSU Banquet
March 24. This highlight of BSU
activities will be held in the Ball
room of the Memorial Student Cen
ter at 6:30 p.m.
Pratt is one of Baylor’s rare
music students. Before coming to
Baylor, he attended Belleville High
School, in Belleville, 111. Presently
he is a graduate student in the
music school, but proceeding this
is a enviable list of activities and
accomplishments.
Some of these are Who’s Who in
American Colleges and Universit
ies, student congress, student mis
sionary to the Orient, director of
the state BSU Choir, director of
the Project Understanding Choir,
solist for Baylor Religious Hour
Choir, Baylor Oratorio Chorus,
Baylor Bands and Rapsody, and
Baylor Opera.
Pratt also teaches voice on grad
uate assistantship at Baylor, is
Director of Music at First Bap
tist Church, Hillsboro, and parti
cipated in the youth-led revivals
under the Texas Division of Stu
dent Work.
Pratt will serve in the dual role
of emcee and entertainer, and is
noted for his humor almost as
much as his music.
The program also will feature
Karen Carpenter of Howard Payne
in a variety act and the origional
Brazos-Bottoms Trio, composed of
Bill Harrison, Basis Shannon, and
Jack Connor from A&M.
Both local residents and students
are cordially invited to attend this
semi-formal banquet; corps stu
dents are authorized to wear civil
ian clothing. The tickets are $2
per person, and may be obtained
from BSU members in the dorm
or at the Baptist Student Center.

DODGES
Unscrupulous people get all the
tax breaks, says a noted economist.
In this week’s Post, he blasts our
“unfair” tax laws. Says the low
rate on capital gains is just a tax
dodge. And tells why he thinks we
should stop tax relief to the elderly
— and even to the blind.
