As head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Smith is responsible for technical train ing and technical competence of all statisticians in' the company. The department consults with all phases of business and has sever al projects undreway at this time. During the past few years, the speaker has delivered many ad dresses on mathematics and sta tistical topics throughout the Uni ted States. At present he is giv ing a course in experimental sta tistics to 22 members of manage ment of the Research Division of Armco Steel Corporation. Smith joined Proctor and Gam ble in 1955 as the company’s first statistician. His first job was to determine the extent that statis tics should play in the organiza tion and to gradually evolve a plan for a statistical unit within the company. The mathematician proposed that the statistical organization be split into two independent parts. The company accepted the plan, and Smith was made head of the De partment of Mathematics and Sta tistics in the industrial engineering organization. During the period 1957-59, the mathematical function of the com pany also became his responsibili ty. In 1959 the industrial engi neering organization became a cor porate function, and the Depart ment of Mathematics and Statistics had its scope broadened to include all phases of the campany’s busi ness. Smith receied his AB devree from the University of Delaware in 1943, and his MA in 1948 and his doctorate in 1954 from North Carolina State College. He was on a special assignment in 1946 to the University of Basel, Basel, Swit zerland, and from 1949-50 he stu died at University College in Lon don. This highlight of BSU activities will be held in the Ball room of the Memorial Student Cen ter at 6:30 p.m. Pratt is one of Baylor’s rare music students. Before coming to Baylor, he attended Belleville High School, in Belleville, 111. Presently he is a graduate student in the music school, but proceeding this is a enviable list of activities and accomplishments. Some of these are Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universit ies, student congress, student mis sionary to the Orient, director of the state BSU Choir, director of the Project Understanding Choir, solist for Baylor Religious Hour Choir, Baylor Oratorio Chorus, Baylor Bands and Rapsody, and Baylor Opera. Pratt also teaches voice on grad uate assistantship at Baylor, is Director of Music at First Bap tist Church, Hillsboro, and parti cipated in the youth-led revivals under the Texas Division of Stu dent Work. Pratt will serve in the dual role of emcee and entertainer, and is noted for his humor almost as much as his music. The program also will feature Karen Carpenter of Howard Payne in a variety act and the origional Brazos-Bottoms Trio, composed of Bill Harrison, Basis Shannon, and Jack Connor from A&M. Both local residents and students are cordially invited to attend this semi-formal banquet; corps stu dents are authorized to wear civil ian clothing.
