THE BATTATTOR Pnpe 4 Oolleffe Station, Texas Friday, February 2f!, 1962 O'Brien Injured; May Have To Quit By DICK BARNES Associated Press Sports Writer LOS ANGELES CP> — Parry O’Brien, whose about-face tech nique revolutionized shot-putting 1 , said Thursday an injured finger may force him to retire. The two-time Olympic champion and first man to throw the 16- pound ball 60 feet said the re curring injury to his right index finger definitely would keep him out of the National AAU Indoor Championships Saturday in New York. “It doesn’t look like I will ever put the shot again,” he said soft ly at his suburbrm Brentwood htome. He strained the first joint in the finger during ii workout last week. He said his finger slipped on the leather-coivered shot. O’Brien was to face young New York University ace Gary Gub- ner in the AAU meet — the man who just two w*eeks ago handed 31-year-old O’Bi.aen the first in door defeat of h|is career. But the follow ing Monday found one of the grid- ders, junior quartei’back Jim Kel ler, joining his teammates and Coach Bob Rogers for the ensu ing backetball season. Keller, a 6-3, 190-pound from Terrell, came to A&M in 1959 on a basketball scholarship. In the spring of last year he decided to experience but was an all-stater at Terrell High. The 20-year-old physical educa tion major has so far been an integral part of Roger’s relief quintet in varsity basketball. He has scored 35 points and has the best free throw percentage on the team, .875. Keller’s game high came against Seattle when he dropped in 11. He has collected 19 rebounds. Jim was third string quarter back in the ’61 spring training, backing up Ronnie Brice and Jim Hogs Here Tonight The Aggie cagers’ Southwest Conference championship hopes were dimmed considerably in H<ms- ton when they wefe downed by the Rice Owls, but there is still a good chance for at least a tie for the title — providing SMU and Tech each lose a game. Arkansas’ Razorbacks invade Aggieland tonight and with them is the nation’s outstanding free throw shooter — Tommy Boyer, a 6-6 forward from Fort Smith, Ark. Boyer has the best charity percentage shooting in the count ry, but he isn't the only one on the team who can hit from the line. Jerry Carlton, a second team All- SWC choice last year, is also ac curate from the free throw line. He is third in season scoring in the SWC with 376 points and an 18.0 average. Boyer is the top scorer in SWC play’with 214 points and is three points ahead of SMU’s Jan Loud- ermilk. A&M’s Carroll Broussard has 189 points. Arkansas is a position team — one that works for the shots. The Razorbacks are a -fine rebounding team as their team height is a- round 6-5. Earlier in the season, the Ra zorbacks edged the Aggies in Fay etteville, 64-59. The Hogs have a 5-6 record in the SWC and are pre sently in sixth place, one game be- Lemm Named As Chicago Cardinals’ New Head Coach ST.
